Reselling - http://www.centralinfo.net / http://www.ultraspeedusa.com

Both these resellers offer good services and packages, offering resellers 50% off to resell accounts at own prices. Can anybody tell me what experiences they have had with either of these, how the customer service is and which you would recommend? Or are there any others which offer similar reseller programs at similar prices?

Chaos,

Perhaps both of them offering good packages.
But I like to give my opinion that reselling Ultraspeedusa is better.
No, Recently I'm not their customer yet :D

But think about it:
See that centralinfo using their own controlpanel to manage their customer accounts.
This means that once you have enough customers and profit to jump to your own dedicated box, it's very hard to migrate your customers account to your own box. Why? because your customer will see that their account manager is different than before. (except you rent your own box from centralinfo as well as their controlpanel script) :D

Reselling Ultraspeed (or any other web hosting company which using cpanel script) is better.
Once you are ready to jump to your own box, you will have lot of choice where to buy your colo/dedicated box, because cpanel is a shareware script. So you can buy it..see? :D

Thx.

Gotcha, makes good sense.

What if I were interested in running my own box from home, is it simple enough? I mean, what programs would I need to purchase/download in order to function a quality web hosting company with good services? How do I go about supporting MySQL, FrontPage, SSL, error pages, etc? I see all these hosting companies supporting many of these services which makes it more confusing when interested in setting up my own. Would a 56k dialup account be substancial? I can't get cable or adsl in my area as of yet (Perth, Western Australia). However I can easily enough have a 99.9% uptime. What other things must I consider if wanting to do this.

Thanks for your time and help.

Although hosting it from home is what I'd like to do. I don't know if I'd be able to handle doing so at this stage. I'll most likely just go with a reseller for now, because with most dedicated servers I've seen so far charge extra for MySQL, FrontPage extensions, etc. So UltraSpeedUSA is probably what I'll go with unless anyone else has an opinion of someone better? I would prefer someone who supports ASP aswell.

Hosting from home would not be a wise idea, especially on a 56k modem. You would also have to consider factors such as power (You would need a UPS as well as generator backup).

In your current situation I would say go with Ultraspeed.

I don't think you quite understand what a dedicated server is. With a dedicated server, IT IS YOUR BOX, you have root access to it, you control what software to run/install, you can do what you like with it. Once you have your dedicated server you can install as much software as the hardware permits, mysql can be downloaded from http://www.mysql.com, php from http://www.php3.net, perl from http://www.perl.com, apache from http://www.apache.org, frontpage extensions from http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/, qmail from http://www.qmail.org or if you prefer sendmail from http://www.sendmail.org.

Most dedicated server providers will just say Linux, because most Linux distributions already include all the above software, and the majority of dedicated server providers will set them up for a default site. If they're not installed, unlikely, then just download them and install them. Granted installing on Unix/Linux is harder than NT but you get used to it.

Regarding 56k Modem: Ha.... You'd need at least 100x that capacity. A 56k Modem would not be able to support more than 1 "slow" con-current user. This is why we have dedicated server/co-location providers with big bandwidth. I'd also recommend against DSL/ADSL hosting, I've never heard of a successful, profitable, or reputable web hosting company running on anything less than a T1. Even web hosting providers with just a T1 (which is 1.54mbps) are laughed at now, you need at least a fractional DS3/T3.

However I can easily enough have a 99.9% uptime

I seriously doubt you'd be able to maintain such an uptime, even the best of host struggle to get their servers up all the time. For starters

Q: What happens when there is more than 1 or 2 concurrent users trying to connect to your server which is connected via a 56k modem.
A: Timeout, Not accessible. To everyone else equals downtime.

Q: What happens when your phone company reset the line or do work in your area? Or the dial-up connection is dropped?
A: Timeout, Not accessible. To everyone else equals downtime.

Q: Do you have static IPs routed to your dial-up connection, which would recover the above situation?
A: Would have to be a pretty good dial-up account to have such features. Seriously doubt it on a 56k account.

Q: What happens when your ISP has problems? Is your ISP 100% reliable?
A: Downtime.

When there is a power-cut? Do you power backup?
A: Downtime.

Q: Do you have redundant connections?
A: ???.

And most importantly do you have the necessary system administration skills to get a linux/unix or even an NT box running? and securely? There are just too many points of failure, far too many...

Go with reselling to begin with :)

If it was my choice I'd go with ultraspeed.

Didn't centralinfo used to resell for U2ME3? Correct me if I'm wrong.

All though I have only been with Ultra Speed USA some days (as a reseller) they seem profesional, nice and overall as a good host and they have just upgraded all plans as well so I recommend them.

Again I have only been with them a few days so I can't give you any real opinion other than I have had a very good first impression.

SysAdmin, yeah I am going to go with reselling :)
I was just looking at the alternatives and what was involved but not to do so immediately. And I did get the idea of a dedicated server but I didn't realise it was dedicated in the way that you could install anything you want for free. So thanks for clearing things up.
