View Full Version : Help me choose BB for my TechSite!
FrzzMan 04-19-2002, 10:46 AM Recommend me a BBS to use in my TechSite. My site all about computer hardware, overclock... for Vietnamese Overclockers... It must be fast, then good security, then features rich...
I think vBulletin is good but it have too many features which can slow down everything. Plus, there's some features we never touch. I have some choose of phpBB2, XmB and UBBThreads (fast and simple but pricey)...
Thank you!
Hello
I have tested more than 15 BBs on different sites and these are my choices:
- Paid (*nix) : vBulletin
- Free (*nix): phpBB 2.0.0
- Free (Windows) : snitz
I have selected these after different tests and long experience on websites. (These are selected from others like Burning Board, XMB, OpenBB, ...)
Regards,
Mac
WBB (Burning Board) (http://www.woltlab.de)
blacknight 04-19-2002, 12:22 PM YaBBse (http://www.yabb.info) - nice and fast. It has lots of features, but you can turn off many of the ones that you don't need.
Burning Board will not be free after version 2.0.
If you need a free forum software you must stick with version 1 in that case.

Most of hosts do not permit running YaBB. (We too).

blacknight 04-19-2002, 12:29 PM You probably mean the Perl version , not the PHP one
padders 04-19-2002, 12:29 PM Don't not pick vbulletin because it has too many features, if you want you can turn the ones you don't want to use off and I don't think it slows it down. I know of a number of vbulletins with over a million posts and 500 people online. I don't know of any other forums, bar perhaps OpenTopic that can handle these loads, or are handling these loads in the "wild".
MikeG 04-19-2002, 03:22 PM If you are using SQL Server 2000 for the DB, then AspPlayground would be your best solution.
It's the fastest BBS that I've ever seen. Check it out: http://www.aspplayground.net
FrzzMan 04-19-2002, 03:38 PM Since my site won't going pass 100 users online and 500k posts in at least another 6 months... So I don't need the board that handle too much load. I just need the fastest... the fastest... PHP/MySQL based... after that, cool design is good too. And security, I don't like hacker much...
Gonna try out phpBB2 and YaBBse... Thank you, any other ideas are appreciate...
Smirks 04-19-2002, 04:33 PM I reccomend phpBB2 all the way!
FrzzMan 04-19-2002, 07:08 PM Just check it out... Cool design, good developer, well support... Gonna install it!!! Thank you allllll
Matt Lightner 04-19-2002, 07:13 PM Might want to take a look at http://www.mercuryboard.com/
A customer of ours brought it to my attention (actually I think he is a developer for it). If you're looking for fast loading pages, it's definitely worth a shot.

Hey,
Yabb SE is the new MySQL/PHP version of YaBB. If any of your clients want to run the cgi YaBB, nudge them on to this. It has saved us several sales. :)
Just thought you'd like to know........
DaHOST 04-22-2002, 10:07 AM phpBB2 is the way to go.
