Ya but man are they expensive. It's $150 just for the application.

<IMHO> I don't think $150 is expensive. Paying application fees such as this are normal business expenses. Obviously in the States you can get merchant accounts and gateway services for cheaper, but that is becuase there is more competition. Internationally the choices aren't as readily available - especially if you specifically want Authorize.net. </IMHO>

I cant remeber the exact numbers. But last time they give a qoute to setup a merchant for Australian venture was something like US$800. Then there is monthly fee and I think 4-5% transaction fee. That was worse than revecom.

The last quote we received for one of our e-commerce clients was less than this. Set-up totalled about $350 and discount (transaction) rate was 3.5%.
Maybe they change from country to country? I don't know.
Latley it has started to look like I am Planet Payments biggest fan - which is not really the case (I have been involved in other discussions involving them in the past few days). It is just that there are so many posts about how setting up a merchant account is to expensive - which IMHO is not correct. If $350 total set-up fees is too expensive then I have to wonder about a business' cash flow.
But I agree that $800 - as quote above, is too steep.

To me $800 smacks of a 'we don't want your business thanks' message!
The key thing is surely the percentage fee, which for us was a fair bit less than Worldpay and overall not bad (for the UK) given it includes the gateway fees.
PP gives you control of the credit card numbers, which I felt was important in case we ever had to move to another merchant account provider
Customer service is not their strong point, if you have problems I would recommend phoning repeatedly and you will get bumped up the priority list. The staff I have spoken to have been quite helpful and intelligent.

Its funny that We told them NO three or four times before their sales representative stop contacting us. Anyway, I guess they probably have pretty competitive rate within the US. But for non US people, it simply doesnt look cost effective.
Anyway, I never used them. So I cant comment on their service.

The quoted fees that I mentioned in my earlier quote where for a non US customer of ours. So I don't think the quote they gave you was high just because you were non US.
xtraordinary also indicated that he is from the the UK and didn't get those kind of rates .... so I don't know what to tell you.
