View Full Version : directNIC vs StargateInc

Hi everyone,

Could I please have your input on both these registrars? I currently have two domains registered with StargateInc, and I'm registering another one soon. I don't know if I should continue with StargateInc (I really dislike their customer support), or get another registrar.

If any of you have had experience with both of these, what are the major differences besides the price ($15 vs $13.95)? Which would you recommend?

Thanks very much!

Jessica :)

I've used about 8 different registrars and directNIC is by far THE best. I also use Namecheap (because of the price), but for all my "mission critical" names, I use directNIC. IMHO, the industries best customer service. I've never had a problem with them.

I also have a couple of names with Stargate, but I'll move them to either Namecheap or directNIC (have to decide how important the names are). Stargate is OK, but I'm not overly impressed with them.

I choose GKG, lower price than DirectNIC and Stargate!

I use stargate.com. No problems.

I am a long time user of Stargate.com and in the last 2 years I have registered, transferred and sold more than 300 domains through them. Their control panel is very easy and very comprehensive. I recommend them not only for the price ($8.95 for registering 2 or more domains at a time) but because of the value they offer and the service they provide.

Hi Abu Mami,

I have a follow up question on your post.... :)

What makes directNIC different and better from Stargate?

When you registered with either directNIC and Namecheap, was the registration on a secure server? I've visited BOTH sign-up pages and none of them are secured. Whereas Stargate's sign-up is secured from the beginning.

Thank you!

Jessica :)

I have registered dozens of domains through stargateinc and have had only a few complaints. Actually getting someone on the phone is an obtuse process at best, but once I got them, the problem was resolved in minutes. I continue to use them and am happy. I highly reccomend stargateinc, their prices can't be beat and I have only had problems with a single domain out of 60+.

i have used both companies in the past and i would say that directnic offered better service, and overall their system works better. However, I didnt have a large enough number of domains with either to accurately compare their services.

Before increase in price of stargate, i definitely offer you stargate.

Now, if you can make some pre-payments, i offer you opensrs

Stargate increased single domain registrations only.
Register 2 or more at $8.95 each.

What do you mean prepayments?

I don't understand what he means by prepayments either. :)

About Stargate, as I understand it, when you register two or more domains, you pay $8.95 but then when you renew the next year, you have to pay the regular fee.

You are correct. They did change their older pricing very recently.
But I have a bulk account with them so I pay $8 per domain.

If you are interested, email me with your details and I can arrange something for you :D

Just purchased my first domain from NameCheap, and they seem to be buttering the bread quite well at this point  . No complaints as of yet, hopefully it will remain as such

In fact, directNIC just changed to 128 bit security and I couldn't access my account because my browser didn't have 128 bit support. After a browser upgrade via the Microsoft site, everything is fine.

I like both directNIC and Namecheap. Both have excellent support and good features. Namecheap in my opinion is the better deal because their price is so cheap and their support is almost as good as directNIC. I still use directNIC for my most important domains.

I hope this helps.

Just transferred a domain to Namecheap from stargate =P

There are people here who think stargate's a nightmare if you try to transfer a domain away from them.

I did have a semi nightmare as Stargate's whois servers seems to be uncontactable by the new registrar, and I have to contact Namecheap personally to ensure everything went smoothly.

I used to be such a fan of stargate, but since they increased their prices and have such a troublesome whois server, I've switched my attention to namecheap and maybe gkg.net

Thanks everyone. :)

Based on feedback here and on this thread (http://webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45893), I decided to give NameCheap a try. I've registered 3 domains with NameCheap and 2 with Stargate. Registrations went OK. I registered them just a few hours ago, and all the domains are now showing in the WHOIS at InterNIC.

xharine, I did notice that Stargate's servers were a little slow today. I had to wait 5 minutes to try to register the domains. Maybe that's why their WHOIS was slow?

 One more question:

Btw, does anyone have trouble accessing WHOIS.ORG? I've been trying for the last couple of days and nothing. I wonder what happened.

Anyway, thanks again! :)

Jessica :)

I have had trouble accessing that site for a few days now as well. It is often slow to update and is not the most reliable site.

However I have yet to find a comparable site which can provide the same information.

You got me typing the URL and then I went "duh!"

Good one! :)

I use this site when WHOIS.ORG is not available, btw...

Jessica :)

I've registered domains with Stargate.com this morning. The process was very quick. Not slow at all.

I did a Telnet to their whois a few minutes ago. Everything went fine. :)
