To whom it may concern,
I found something which I still wonder how it can be real after so many versions of Raqs'.
Can anyone tell me how I can contact the right persons at Sun (cobalt) to get this bug, sorry error, even worst : HORROR, confirmed by them.
I will explain this problem to different forums, later. But as said, I need them to confirm what I found out, to see if it is only on my raqs, or on them all.....
The only thing which worries me is that how this can be possible to be the only one whom noticed this.
Are raqs' so reliable????????
Please help!!!!!!!!!! This would be good for all of us(even if I made a mistake, which I am sure NOT)

Cheers

go to the cobalt webpage. there are email addresses there. maybe go to www.pkgmaster.com and let them know as well.

i'm sure pkgmaster would patch it up if it's a real bug in about 1/36 the amount of time that cobalt would take.

Cheers Skylab

But I doubt PKGMaster could help. The problem is more Hard than Soft.

So the buggy part would be sorted out after the hard is fixed.

And any Complains Address or Review or .......?????

its probably not a bug but a feature :)

Well that's actually why I'm looking for Responsible persons at SUN.
It would be silly if I spreaded wrong things on forums. Do you agree with me???
Maybe it's an exceptional figure? a construction fault???
So I need to get heard of them first.
Other thing: if it's really this, I will sue them for 57hours(so far) of work that I need to justify with my bosses.
PLUS, a new raq4r bought as an emergency case for fixing the problem.

Now I notice that without this bloudy problem, I would have spent maybe 2 hours of work and the company would have not bought a new raq, specially to get everything running

So please advise who we should contact?
(any cobalt person in charge reading this????)

But why don't you just say where we're talking about?

We KNOW you aren't very sure, perhaps someone of us can confirm a bug...?

I'm sorry payam, but the way you have worded your message causes me to suspect that you have a new control panel under development? Is this an attempt to cause fear in people using Raq's.....so that they will dump Raq's and switch to your product or a product you just happen to recommend?

Contact Cobalt Support for Free here:
http://supportforum.sun.com/cgi-bin/WebX.cgi?/cobalt.raq.general

Pay $95 per Support Incident by calling: 1-800-526-0484

It's unlikely your going to find a direct phone line to the CEO of SUN Cobalt.

I'm sorry but I smell a "rat".

You should post what you suspect here in the forum, there are so many raq owners here (some even smarter then SUN folks) that will either confirm or deny what you suspect. Otherwise it will appear you are just trying to generate mass panic and I doubt you'll be successful at that. Kinda like running around screaming "The worlds gonna end".

If you would like to confirm your findings, I could help... I own a number of different Raq's including the following models.

Raq 2+
Raq 3
Raq 3i
Raq 4
Raq 4i
Raq 4r

You may PM me or email me direct as I have a number of different contacts at SUN. But I'll advise you, its easier to get a free ride on the space shuttle then it is to get ahold of the "right person" at SUN Cobalt sometimes.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm back again, sorry I was trying to do an attempt with the migration utility of Sun Cobalt

All right, so please read this, and for the ones who didn't care on my first thread(EXCEPTED my kind friend FiberOptic) on the 18th of April (Ref: RECOVERY )and probably really paniqing now.... I would say you should read all threads and give your opinions, even 2 or 3 words will be much appreciated by ones whom put them on in the forum.... But anyway...
1) Read the thread Recovery. (18/04/2002)
2) Now you know what's happened
3) I know what RAID is , but
4) Go to the User Manual of Cobalt page 173(in the printed book, pdf manual is different)-
5) Figure 61 Layout of the IDE cables
6) Do everybody agree on this figure
7) If Yes: I have an "ODD" Raq4r , probably mounted On Neptune
8) if No: tell me what you have found , anormal.

..................
9) Small helpy:
Look around the HDD
10) we continue this after

PS: AS A NEWBIE? I CAN SAY THAT I LOVE RAQS, SO IF I DO THIS THAT WAY, IT IS ONLY FOR BEING CAREFULL
That's all ...
Again, I love my raqs, they are great

I saw that page too...
(PDF version page 167...)
Now what...?

Layout of IDE devices....

You don't need to search it anymore dear RaQ4 users..
I've attached the picture to this MSG.

Hmm,I guess I'm figuring out what he is trying to say..
The Hardware configuration of RAQ 4 is located on page 167 right?
Well, then he might have opened the box and noticed that the hardware on his RAQ mislocated compared to the picture on page 167.
is that right?, payam?

OK, I understand what you are saying. Bummer Dude, sorry to hear about the PowerSupply..... You can buy a replacement PS you know..

As far as the Hardware layout of your raq motherboard, You just sorta have to look at it and use "Trial & Error". There are a number of different Motherboard revisions out there...and after owning over 65 Cobalts...... Nutten Surprises me anymore!

I've got Raq 4's (Not the 4i or 4r) with external SCSI ports and some without. Some with a single IDE connector, some with Dual IDE connectors. Some with Dual Hard Drive power leads, some with only one.

I've even got a Raq4r with Dual NIC, Dual IDE, Single Drive power lead (They used a Y cable to power both drives) and No external SCSI. Try and find that config anywhere on Cobalts site. Along the same models of Raq's......You'll see multiple configs.

Like Forrest Gump says...... Raq's are like a box of chocholates, you never know what you're gonna get inside!

But, I too...... Love them (Most people either love them or hate them).

Regarding the swaping of hard drives and which is the primary IDE, Don't worry too much.... If you put the blank drive in the primary position....The Raq "Shouldn't" do any harm..... It'll just boot, reboot, reboot, reboot. Just power it down and swap the drives around... It'll boot up and Mirror the data to the blank drive then.. After the mirror process is complete, I'd swap the drives again and put the newer drive in as the secondary and let it mirror again. (You'll need to Fdisk the Drive to make sure it empty). NEVER replace a failed Raq4r drive with a drive that contains data, always use a BLANK drive. - That's per the documentation, I really don't know what would happen.

My 2 Cents.

Thanx for all that advice...

But Payam said:
"Can anyone tell me how I can contact the right persons at Sun (cobalt) to get this bug, sorry error, even worst : HORROR, confirmed by them. "

I don't think an other placement of the RAQ's hardware is called a bug... Perhaps there is someting else he discovered...

So Payam...
JUST SAY IT BUDDY

Yeah its no surprise.......some of the layouts are different on the same model, it just depends on the different periods you order the server.

Im so used to the surpises from Sun Cobalt nothing gets me to panic anymore. Everytime you see something wierd just give it a good yawn. What else do you expect from Cobalt?

Hi,
Thanks to all of you...
FiberO. sorry to not have used the right words, but I've only meant a wrong figure in my Manual by saying about a bug or HORROR. But let me explain:
As a newbie, I wanted to do as Sun Cobalt tells me to do. So Raq4less, I agree on what you say about a blank HDD connected as a primary and of course with no OS , it will reboot & reboot & reboot.....till somebody switches it off.
But Sun Cobalt say you have to use the Restore CD for any new HDD, and if you do that, then your new HDD won't be Blank anymore and it won't reboot and reboot if you put it as primary(by mistake). And it will mirror on the secondary HDD, as it BLOUDY DID ON 1 OF MY HDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....)
So should I have listened to Cobalt as a newbie??????????
YES, and this way I found the Problem of connection
Thx to FiberOptic again for finding out the figure but please have a look on my correction to it: http://www.signform.be/sun_cobalt/FIGURE.gif

Question to Raq4less: Could you tell me how blank should a HDD be?I mean: how could I format a HDD??? any parameters to the insttruction FDISK, could you be a bit more 'mother to kid"'s explaining way... well this sentence doesn't mean anything!! I meant try to be very simple in your Howto's...

By the way I tried the Migration Utility, and it sank.....
-Could anybody help me with this?????
-How should the configuration of the target be??????
The files generated by cmuExport did go well but cmuImport keeps on failing????
-Should the target have the same Ip or domain name as source's ones?

Cheers
Payam

Hy Payam...

About the Cobalt Migration Utility:

You can find a few webpages about it at http://emea.cobalt.com/products/raq/migration.html

Also, a manual, explained from mother to baby is included in that page: http://emea.cobalt.com/pdfs/migration.utility.pdf

By that, you should be able to backup and restore all sites to another RaQ without any problem...

;) Cheers Fiberoptic:

I finally succeeded to put another HDD into my Raq without harming the primary one and the mirroring is going perfect.

So I was right and the connections in the User Manual were wrong...

:) But anyway it's an happy end
I thank you all, sorry again if I was a bit strange and suspicious in the begining of my thread.

By the way, thanks also for your tip for the Migration Utility.
But I think I'll have a look on that a bit later...

Talk to you soon
Happy Payam
