OK Have you guys noticed anything?

InterNAP has this unique technology that goes beyond simple BGP4 routing. Here are an excerpt about their network:


We believe InterNAP offers the most unique routing and IP connectivity model in the industry and will provide you with the fastest, most reliable, and scalable Internet service available. The distinct difference between us and other providers is that we direct connect through PAID transit agreements to the top NINE National Service Providers (Uunet, Sprint, C&W, GTE/BBN, Digex, ATT, Verio, Global Crossing and Qwest).

Because InterNAP pays (not peer) for transit, your IP space would be simultaneously advertised to our upstream providers.

InterNAP bypasses the public and private network access points by connecting directly to the nine major backbone providers, so that each InterNAP client appears to be on-net to all nine networks simultaneously.


So, I can see that InterNAP does seem to be OnNet with UUNet (Alter.net), Sprint, Verio, ATT, Global Crossing, etc ...

One thing that I know of, InterNAP Intelligent Routing is different than BGP4, but I am not sure whether you can be ON-NET with different providers by doing BGP4. For example, NAC claims to have bandwith from ATT. Well, my ISP at home is using ATT. When I try to do the traceroute to NAC I got:

Superb JayJay ... You are tracerouting from PNAP to another PNAP. If you check this frequently then I will expect to see the traceroute be different at different times. The patented intelligent routing of InterNAP will choose the best route and the best route can be different at different times. That particular time, the two PNAPs (origin/destination) seem to be on Sprint Backbone. At different time, it could be on UUNet backbone.

NAC receiving your AT&T-sourced traffic through Level3 doesn't mean they aren't advertising routes to AT&T, although it does make it somewhat less likely. You'd have to ask them about that.

I believe there are a number of "proprietary technologies" which do what InterNAP is describing. Some of them are probably patented. Some of them are probably lousy; at least one was recently ridiculed on NANOG. Making routing adjustments based on performance testing has several possible problems. This is *not* a knock on InterNAP, just a comment on the theory behind this kind of system.

1) You have very limited control over inbound traffic paths.
2) You're chasing a moving target; for brief problems, you might even do worse than just "weathering the storm".
3) Your performance testing may be "intrusive" or otherwise annoying to destination networks, or for various technical reasons may be inaccurate. e.g., if you use ICMP, it's not necessarily indicative of TCP performance. e.g., if you measure RTT on DNS inquiries, the DNS servers are not necessarily in the same network location as the destination.

Too much info? Well, you asked :) We're connected to most of those providers as well, and do our tuning by hand. We're happy with it. I'm sure InterNAP does a fantastic job with their technology.

I think it's right. When the Intelligent Routing (the so called Assimilator 3.0) fails, what InterNAP has is simply BGP4 to the nine different backbones they utilize.

Yes that's right, but the way I see it is that we (webhosting) mainly deals with outbound traffic and not so much with inbound.

I talked to the InterNAP rep when I visited their facility. The decision to switch the routing is not made instanteously as soon as the Assimilator sees any problem. In fact, there is a duration of time (forget how long) where the assimilator will make further judgment before it finally decides to change the routing. There are many factors (packet loss, latency, etc) that come into consideration.
