I am interested in building an e-commerce store i do not know anything at this point about building a website.
Would anyone be kind enough to explain to me the difference between Zen Cart and osCommerce? and the pros and cons of each? or is there anything that is better than these two?

Zen cart are based on osCommerce
It is like Oscommerce with some more features, it is easier for coder beginers.
Anyway, some people like Oscommerce as it have larger community and a lot of contribution, so you can take only options that you need

there are many other e-commerce scripts available out there as well. i would suggest that you look through each and everyone before making a decision over which one to use.
I'm not sure if i can post a link to another place, but since it is also part of i-net, try HotScripts.com.

Take a look http://www.oscdox.com. It is a heavily moded version of oscommerce offering much better features than a standard oscommerce install. You will need to create a free account to download it, but don't worry they won't spam you. I would highly recommend this above a standard oscommerce install.

In opensource osCommerce is pretty good, even having a large community their support are good including knowledge base support. http://www.oscommerce.info/

Well basically Zen Cart is a fork of osCommerce up to the latest v1.2.6. It is more secure and has a dozens and dozens of more features built in so you don't need a bunch of contributions. Zen Cart has frequent official stable releases too.
There is a newer version of Zen Cart to be released real soon, v1.3 that strips out all the osC legacy code (which should tell you something) and is much better. It will be easy to upgrade to it if you go with v1.2.6 now.
