Not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum, but...

We're considering purchasing an FTP program for our use, as well as to possibly provide to our clients.

What FTP programs do you recommend, and why?

Thanks ahead for your help...;)

SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com) - nice interface, user friendly, multiple languages, complete online manuals/knowledge base/support forum.. and free :D

Suprisingly I found a program recommended by Bravenet... Low and behold the greatest contributor of SPAM to my mailbox... No matter how many filters I setup (including blocking bravenet*.* completely)...

AceFTP I found to be a simple to use program with a great deal of options and a easy to use interface that was very quick as well. Free too....

But, by far the best program I have used is FTP Voyager... Simply great program... I find my self going back and uninstalling it and re-installing it many many times simply for it features.... I would by it but, I'm freaking poor....

Both can be found at download.com.....

Have downloaded SmartFTP, and trying it now.

I have tried the following programs over the years:
- WS_FTP (used it for years)
- CuteFTP (didn't like it)
- BulletProof FTP (didn't like it)
- AbsoluteFTP (used it for a year)
- FTPVoyager (used it for a year)

And now I'm using SmartFTP as well and like it the best. I like the interface and it's very easy to use. I consider AbsoluteFTP and FTPVoyager to be great FTP programs as well, but if I had to choose (even if SmartFTP would have cost money), I would choose SmartFTP without a doubt.

I have used:

WS FTP
Cute FTP
Cute FTP Pro

Will stay with the last one, Cute FTP Pro.

by far smart ftp , its free and just as good as any "pay for" ftp client , if not better . As far as ws_ftp , yuck , ugly , and it costs . i mean i rather up using x/z modem then ws_ftp , dont pay for a client , download one for free

CuteFTP rocks. I hate WS_FTP. Those damn log files it stores are annoying and a security risk. Why publish more info than is needed on a web server?

Cute FTP Pro. I used ws_ftp for YEARS until a few weeks ago, when I discovered that just about every other FTP program allows you to delete a directory without clearing it first. I've tried

WebFTP (http://www.codegeneration.com/webftp/ftpindex.html), SmartFTP, and Bulletproof FTP also, but Cute is definitely my favourite.

Erm, if you'd gone to options and clicked the one that allows you to delete directories without emptying them first you might have saved a bit of frustration :)

WS_FTP here too The new version (version 7) has seem some enhancement like resume down/upload in case your connection drops on those big file moves. It now shows the file permissions of files and directories (no more guessing). Quite nice.

Same interface though so if you can handle plain and uninteresting, but intelligently designed and fast, then that's the one for you.

Man, before this one is locked, I like flashfxp the best. But I will try smartftp now, since it's free.

I haven't used Smart FTP yet, still using Absolute. I have tried Cute and WS didn't like 'em.

Edited to say: I found the link for Smart FTP and I'm installing it now.

I've used SmartFTP for a while now (at least 6 months) and the interface is nice, but the one thing that bugs me about it is the favorites feature. It's not like normal windows favorites, it doesn't allow you to sort it in a specific order and the feel of it isn't good (hard to explain). I've downloaded CuteFTP Pro due to the recommendations in this thread and have found it quite impressive compared to SmartFTP. It even allows you to ftp using SFTP (using SSH2), instead of the non-secure standard FTP connection. I'm using the 30 day trial right now... but looks like I'm going to get a license for it :).

i am a webdrive fan

this ftp client maps the remote server to the windows file system so that it appears as another drive letter in explorer

thus files on the remote system can opened directly with any software running on the local system

Being able to edit files within the ftp client is awsome for those tiny updates and typos to different documents :)

I like the console FTP program. :) If you're looking for something with a GUI, then try WS_FTP for Windows, and gFTP for Linux.

Hi,

We recommend WS_FTP LE to all our clients because it's so simple and powerful. But if you're going to be using FTP everyday and accessing lots of different accounts and doing many things, then you have to get WS_FTP Pro. It's only about $40 and it's the best out there for a professional. I've tried them all since and Pro is just the best hands down.

Hoewever get the free LE here:

Did you know that ws_ftpLE doesn't have the batch delete function? < just downloaded ws_ftp pro out of utter curiosity

fatman
04-21-2002, 08:33 AM
Yes, WS_FTP LE also doesn't have a few of the features of the Pro version (otherwise they won't be able to sell the Pro variety :) ). Besides the batch delete, it also lacks the ability to preserve the file date/time of a file downloaded from a server. But the LE version suffices for the usual tasks, and there are workarounds.

I have to say that I have been using Smart FTP for a few days now and I love it! It's sooooooooo fast! I realized that Absolute was what was slow, not my connection. I do have a question though, how do I make the local folder always on top of the screen? When I connect, the program moves the local folder to the bottom. I'm getting used to it, but I like it on the top, easier or something. Thanks! :)

Smartftp was the first I've used & I've found no need for another!

sorry I cant answer your question GG, I dont think you can change that!....

...the only drawback I've found with it is that it automatically chmods folders when they are created & I've found no way of changing the setting myself....(does anyone know what it sets them at...755 or 777?)

tensixteen64
04-21-2002, 04:48 PM
I created folders and they weren't CHMODed for me! How odd! I'm sure there is a setting somewhere in there for that. I will have time tomorrow to play and I will check. :)

I used CuteFTP and WS_FTP for a couple of years, finally decided to upgrade both, and felt the interfaces had gone down the crapper. So I tried SmartFTP along with several others and it is now my FTP Client of choise.

I'm surprised no one else has used this program -- I like it 100x more than any of the FTP's listed in this thread (and I have used them all :o )

http://www.BitBeamer.com/

Its got more features than you can shake a stick at, and its multi-threaded so you can transfer multiple items at once for shorter duration transfers. :D

CUTE FTP ...bcoz of its easy interface & also u can import export your all FTP connection information so in case system crash just import it from ur backup & u are online !
There is one security hole also....by using simple password grabber software any one can get your all ftp account password stored in cute ftp wizard & u will think ur site is hacked:D

I've used so many but right now I'm using smartftp. One feature I'm missing with it is the ability to edit a file on the server with a click of the button, not downloading first. Another that works really nice is 3dftp, plus it has nice graphics!!

SmartFTP is the best!!!

I know it's been said 100 times.. but I thought I should show where my loyalties lay...

I started out way back like most on WS_FTP95 (when it was new) and stuck with it till I found SmartFTP (tried CuteFTP once but didn't like it)

SmartFTP
I too, tried this program and did not like how it was always creating Directories and temp files. Did I miss a setting somewhere to turn that off? I was using v1.0.963.

BitBeamer
Being the creator of LeechFTP (which I have used and recommended for years) I looked with great anticipation towards BitBeamer. Trouble was, the 30 demo download never works -- at least for me. Always got a msg. that the 30 day demo had expired and all I had done was install it. An Email to the creator was sent about 3 weeks ago, but still no reply. Maybe he's rich and doesn't care? I dunno.

BulletProof
This program (v2.40) seems to have problems. I always have to start it at least twice, sometimes 3 times, because the first time always returns an "illegal operation" message and shuts down. This is on Windows 98SE. Other than that it's not a bad program, but could improve in a few ways before I feel it's worth the $30.

I keep on searching and LeechFTP is the benchmark I always use. Best darn Free FTP program out there, IMHO. WebFtp and WebDrive look interesting, though. Shall be giving them an evaluation and see how they compare.

Save a few bucks and give SmartFTP a try. Its free, full featured, and works as well as CuteFTP or some of the other leading non-free products. I've used it for a while and I'm a big fan.

I like NFTP. Works on just about every client system out there and gives an identical interface on every one. No, it's not for the super dumb, but it's a very clean, light program that does a great job of transferring files.
