View Full Version : Company name different than your website address?

My company name is very different than my hosting website address.

ie: (I don't want to give out my name here yet, so I've used a similar example.)

My business name is Monto Centric Internet Solutions, Inc. But my hosting site is called MCWebHosting.com (MC Web Hosting)

Do you think this is a turn-off, or unprofessional to potential customers? Or even worse.. confusing?

What should I "advertise" in my email signature? I want people to know that I'm incorporated, but at the same time.. that the website is called something else.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

Hi,
It is not that uncommon for a long named business to have a shorter version of their name as their domain name. Go with it, and you should be just fine.

It is easier for them to remember as well.

In your sig,,,

put it like this:

your long company name here
http;your shortdomain.net
Offering your product solutions or other note after domain.

See... no prob from what I see.

I see no problems if your website name is similar to or an abbreviated version of your incorporated name.

But if the two are completely different, then to cover your behind legally, you might want to put on your website and in your sig something like:

abcdHosts.com a service of xyz, inc.

Just a thought...

I agree with what superiorhost and 4solutions have said.
You will not have any problems, just follow what they have said and you will be fine.

Hi!
I agree with the others on the name part completely.
My company is called Poornam Info Vision Pvt. Ltd.
and one of our sites is called bobcares.com I always write under my poornam.com email. It does not confuse people much...

However, there is one suggestion. MCwebhosting.com would be really confusing with mchost.com which is already totally established in the market... I would suggest a name like monotcentric.com or something which lets people identify you as a company...

Have a great day :)

Amar

Our Dial-Up customers know us by our domain name more than they know us by Milenium Technologies Inc. We started answering the phones mtin instead of Milenium Technologies about a year ago in response to this.
It all goes to brand awareness. Get a feel for how your customers come to know you.

There are a few problems you have to consider. The biggest one being charge backs. You will see a slightly larger charge back ratio because of this. It's VERY important to keep reminding your clients that they are being billed AS "XYZ Company", even that wont completely avoid charge backs but it will help. Make sure to CLEARLY note this in your order form, confirmation page, emails and just about everywhere else.

BAd idea...

maybe maybe maybe shortcut of 2 or 3 letters but not a completely different name.

Why is this so bad? I own a domain with exactly the same name as my company name, but my main company business is not web hosting so I bought additional domain for that. And even I'm going to separate linux and windows hosting services of my company under different domains, because of the marketing and SEO.
What will be the problem if the welcome email for hosting sign-up clearly states:

"You've purchased hosting package from thisismyhostingsite.com division of My Company Inc."

So long as the domain name has some connection to the company then it is fine. It doesn't work so well for your company to be called "Dave's Big Fat Hosting" and the domain to be zd10.com

We have a similar situation. Our customers know us as AssortedInternet.com, not Assorted Internet Ventures LLC. Thus, we need to do some hand-holding sometimes when new customers place an order.

They sometimes get confused or concerned when they see our company name on the order form not realizing that our company name is a little different from our web site address. (We have our company name on the bottom of all of our pages, but I don't think anyone notices.)

We're actually considering getting an even shorter domain name to use so that its easier to say and remember. But, we haven't decided what that will be yet.

Take care,

Brian

It depends, some big companies have totally different domain names to their company, there is a good example i can't think of right now (will edit the post when i remember) One example though is . National Express coaches in the UK have the domain name www.gobycoach.com and no-one has a problem with that.

I'm not sure what states let you do this, but here you can file for an Assumed Name (aka DBA) and use the the web address (or different name) as the Assumed Name registered to your company.

Yeah- the shortened name is fine. I had a client who absolutely insisted on tacking on the LLC at the end of her domain name; I tried to convince her out of it, but she insisted...and now she has a long, ugly domain ;)
