Check that out !

Also, you do not need to pay to get your website listed under yahoo.

If you are looking to get your website listed for free on popular search engines, then I would suggest you two things :

1) Manually submit them to the various search engines

AND

2) Be PATIENT :)

When did you submit it? It will take time to get indexed by google. Don't submit your site more than once in a month otherwise it will get banned. All you need to do - wait .

I heard you shouldnt submit your site manually through google. Could take forever. Instead link to popular sites, and let google find you and index you. Usually sites with high PR that get spidered daily is great. I guess thats the best way to do it.. so I hear ;-)

You have the wrong way around I think.. but i am not sure..
Google will find you quicker when those high pr sites have a link to you, not you to them.. and if you create to much "i link to you you link to me" you get penalised for it

The assumed best practice now for new sites is to link from a few other sites - especially ones that you know the search engine(s) spider daily or weekly - and let the search engines pick up your site naturally. If you already submitted, but don't have anyone linking to your site, then the search engine(s) may decide not to give you much or any preference in search results.

Don't use link exchanges to get links. If you have to, start some free blogs on popular blog sites and link to your site from the blogs... or get bloggers who write in your genre(s) to link to you.

Find a friend with a website and ask him to link to you. You will then get listed in just about every search engine. You can then find many articles on how to move your site up in the search engine.
