Hi all

When i check the whois for .org domains, how do I tell if a domain's locked or not?

i.e. specifically if it's LOCKED or ACTIVE?

any help would be highly appreciated

Infact, with implementation of EPP codes, there's no need to lock .org domains anymore. But, to answer your question, I can't see there's STATUS: ACTIVE or STATUS: LOCKED on .org's whois anywhere. Instead, I can see the following in one of my .org, registered at GoDaddy:

Status:CLIENT DELETE PROHIBITED
Status:CLIENT RENEW PROHIBITED
Status:CLIENT TRANSFER PROHIBITED
Status:CLIENT UPDATE PROHIBITED

And this at Namecheap (i.e. eNom):

Status: OK

Etc etc etc... So, I *think* there's no ACTIVE & LOCKED statuses for .org althought I could be wrong here.

I agree with localpub.

We can see ACTIVE and LOCKED on .com / .net but the .org doesnt show that anymore since Authorization Codes ( EPP CODES ) got implemented to transfer away .org domains.

Hi localpub and CSDesk

thanks for the input. Sorry, I should have been clear about the .com status part. yes, I do know that ACTIVE and LOCKED are only applicable to .com and .net

Likewise, the other

Status:CLIENT DELETE PROHIBITED
Status:CLIENT RENEW PROHIBITED
Status:CLIENT TRANSFER PROHIBITED
Status:CLIENT UPDATE PROHIBITED

are for the .org, .biz and .info (there could be more, i'm not sure)
So, if there are no locked or active status', then what does these mean? and how do you know the losing registrar has accepted the EPP key and has agreed to the transfer?

thanks

Hi again

I just checked PIR and thanks for your input, it made things a little easier to understand.

There's nothing specifically about a locked or unlocked status for domains.

Except...

Client Transfer Prohibited

where the domain is not allowed to be transferred to another registrar. So, I'm not sure how this works even if the losing registrar is provided the EPP key...maybe then they change the status.

Thanks for your help guys

Okay, I have a question then

Who creates the EPP key to begin with? is the registrar or PIR?

The current registrar of the domain name creates this code
