hey,
have you gays heard something about Cogent Communications ( http://www.cogentco.com/Difference/product.html ) ?
Do they realy sell 100mbit/s leased lines for $1000/month ?

Is it possible?

So we have come down to 10 bucks per MBit = $0.03 per GB traffic lol

Well it doesnīt look like a blatant lie but I still donīt get it. Donīt they have to pay other carriers when they exchange traffic in their peering points. They surely could deliver for whatever price in their own network but when it leaves...?

I read an article on WinDrivers.com about this. Seems to be a good deal, but I would read over every single detail very close. Seems too good to be true if you ask me, I've been pricing lines for when I go the dedicated server route and this would be just phenominal if they could indeed offer what the claim. Anybody else have any info on this Company? Maybe any personal experience with on of their connections?

Regards,
Mike

Will they do so with no bandwidth limits? I looked all over their website and from what it seems you can use as much of that line as long as you want for one flat rate.

Who here will do better pricing? I'd love to see that! Cogent is still building and it remains to be seen how quickly this will roll out. We've had zero replies to our emails to them!

That was my fault I glanced at their rate chart and saw 1.5mps for like 1500.00 little did I know that to see theiur rates I had to lookt to the bottom of the chart.

I can guerentee you this, what their proposing is impossible, its just not, ive been in this industry a long time and theres no wa they can do that.

a friend in NY placed an order
They said he will get it in 3 month
We'll wait and see
Seems like an absolutly amazing deal through.

Look at the source of http://cogentco.com/about.htm (last line).
1 Billion in Capital, and can't close a simple hole. ...

I still say its not possible, there is no uplink provider who could provide them that much bandwidth for that amount of money.

Their whole site is geared towards office buildings, not ISPs or serious BW business. I agree with Charles it probably won't be for you and I as hosts in the long run, and if we signed up and based pricing on an unproven model like that - whoa - I'd hate to get caught trying to provide for customers with signed contracts if they went under or changed their opinion of ISP/hosts

This looks like a good deal. I was reading the I want cogent access.

http://www.cogentco.com/Access/wholesale.html

ISP's and web content providers are listed. The only thing is on this page on the right it says 100mb for 3000.00/month. Still a very appealing price for this much bandwidth.

If I can get 100 mbps for only $1000/mo (3 cents per Gig per mo), walah... I will make a lot of fortune from this... (just imagine for a moment...)

But as for now, I will already be happy if I can get <$1/GB/mo (or arount that price) :)

cheers,

If this was possible, they would know something att, sprint, @home, etc doesnt know and I know for sure that they dont. I think what their trying to sell is 100mbit connectivity to the inet, but I know there is no way their going to allow you to use 100mbit/s all the time.

Also I know quite a few companys in the industry and have never heard of this company before, has anyone else? Seems a little fishy that such a BIG player, and no ones ever heard of them, I wish there was a little wager that I could put my life savings into saying that this company isnt for real :)

After all the good posibilities of this cleared I calmed down and thought about it. More than likely this will be like your typical DSL or cable line setup where they give you such and such speed and really not bandwidth regulations clearly set but they most likely will not allow any real form of servers to run on the line. Ah well, would still be a really killer home setup :)

its for interoffice peering there is no bandwidth component on that price it means if you have 3 offices in the US you can get a 100 megabit line between them for 1000.00 a month per location or 3k a month total (which isnt a bad price) you wont get a bit of internet traffic across those lines.

Not bad if you want to have a nice OC-48 somewhere cheap and sep NOCs across the country all coming through the OC-48. Still, from their page:

At Cogent Communications, we provide a state-of-the-art service offering that combines optical technologies with data internetworking protocols to provide reliable, dedicated 100 and 1000 Mbps Internet backbone service

Internet, not Intranet - I'm hoping tomorrow in the mail to get some sort of major delivery about this - a major clue - cause I'm short on them now.

One additional note, this is new technology they are using: Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing - not exactly brand new. but not in wide scale use. You get a lot more out of each fiber...
