I have an IP address that I want to trace where it comes from etc.
Any idea on how to do this?

You'll probably want to do a whois lookup from the ARIN database on who owns the IP address block. Or traceroute and nslookup can be useful as well.

Do you mean you want to know the physical location of a given IP? Try http://visualroute.visualware.com/; not only will it give you where the IP is but also where the IP belongs, etc.

or for a quick and dirty trace....

in winxp/2000 (and i guess 98 also), open up your command prompt and go: tracert i.p.add.ress

you'll see all of your hops and where you hop through to get to the final destination. for for when you want to check out your hops to a prospective new hosting company...

One of the best proggie's 'round to do your every day tracing is a freeware packet called Sam Spade.

It has a lot of options to trace an ip to it's owner or at least the abuse admin ;)

Get NeoTrace, it is a very powerful program, it gives whois output, ping, IP owner, etc..
