How long does it take to rack it up and configure it? I got quoted for 2 hours.

Ouch.. 2 Hours?

I agree with Wolf, if your talking about the AP9211 Masterswitch, your talking about 5 or 10 minutes MAX. All you really need to do is give it an IP, Subnet, Default Gateway. Everything else can be configured over the Web from that point on.

Just my 2 cents

Even if they have to configure it for you, it only takes <30 mins.

OS Installation/Configuration for Datahawk: 1 Hour
Physical Installation (Datahawk, CRT Monitor) on Separate Trip 1 Hour
Installation of Apache, Big Brother, and MRTG on Datahawk 2 Hours
Misc kernel modifications to BSD1 1 Hour
OS Reload/Configuration on BSD2 1 Hour
APC Power Switch Install/Configure 2 Hours

Heres his quotes I am being charged $100 a hour. Does this look right? He's a nice guy, I am sure he will work with me.

No more than 5 minutes. Especially with the setup cd. It takes longer to screw it in the rack than to configure it.

If he's a nice guy, might just want to check if he's familiar with the product, i know when i do consulting, i take the amount of time i think it's gonna take, and multiply it by 4 for a quote, and often times that works out quite well (believe it or not). If he's not familiar with the product, and is preparing for a potential nightmare, that 2 hour quote sounds about right, so just check if he knows the product, if so, ask why so long :) The other time quotes look quite reasonable, only the APC stands out in my eye.

I got a 9211 (9210?) Masterswitch off Ebay, sans manual, including downloading the PDF from apcc.com (I think is their web site) about 20 minutes :)

One of the most user friendly devices ever. I love it, best $240 I've EVER spent.

2hours? Is that guy a comedian or what.

Hook up a console cable: 10 seconds
Login to apc: 10seconds
Assign Ip: 1min
Change Login/Pass:1min
Mount in Rack:5min
Plug in servers:1min

Yeah that looks like 2 hours to me =0

He said he's going to bill me for 6 hours worth of work instead of 8. I guess he knocked the two hours off. He said

"For some reason the web console would not work for me at
all while I was in the datacenter so I spent some time troubleshooting that.
It kept returning 403 (Authorization) errors to my browser. When I got home
it had begun to work perfectly. Plus there is the time involved to make
cat5 for it and reboot/move all the servers on to it."

Ironically enough i had the same problem today with 2 of my APC's, trying to set them up, their software is supposed to be able to pull them off of the network within 1-2 minutes, but never found them, and me without my null modem cable.. had to leave them ... dead :(
