View Full Version : Where to get Cobalt RAQ?
dektong 01-08-2001, 04:26 PM I am just wondering, if I want offer a cobalt raq to my customer (raq3 or raq4), how would I be able to do it? I'm sure I don't have to purchase those raqs before I can offer it to my customer. How do you guys do this? If you guys lease it, where from? Also, is there any good place where I can get a cheap raq3 (And lease it) considering raq3 is now old product (after raq4 kicks in).
I know a good place (CDW.com) where I can get a lease for $360/mo lease for every $10000 borrowed (36 months terms, $1 buyout). Considering entry level raq3 is only about $1000, that means I can lease a raq3 for only $36/mo. Adding bandwith allowance, then I can probably offer this to my customer for $99/mo or something (with 100 Gigs like 4webspace.com, hoping not all of them are using the whole 100 Gigs allowance :)). So is this how it works?
Any thought and info is appreciated
cheers,

Dylan,
Which part, leasing the Cobalts, or the 100 Gigs?
Thanks
dektong 01-08-2001, 09:20 PM if I may know, why? How else would I be able to offer dedicated cobalt server then?

websavvy 01-08-2001, 11:26 PM I'm sure that this forum's readers would loooove to know what domain you will be using when you offer these raqs to the public!
Dylan 01-09-2001, 08:13 AM uuallan, leasing.
Dektong, you'll need to build your own network.
The disadvantages to what you are wanting to do are tremendous that I'm not even going to tell you why.
If anybody is up to it, will you please explain to Dektong...
dektong 01-09-2001, 12:53 PM Dylan,
I will appreciate it if you can tell me the reason why. Probably you already had a valuable experience that I need to know... So, here I am waiting...

Chicken 01-10-2001, 12:04 AM I don't see why not either.
well i can probably tell you because its identical to what i do. first off leasing , leasing is great if you can get enough dollars behind you it took me almost 4 months to find the leasing partners to get my project moving, i spend 250,000 bucks a month on just cobalt hardware. then there is advertising dollars, your lease partner(s) will not fund this for you so your going to need around 10k a month of "spare cash" just to get the puppy moving. finally there is a network to host it all on. your going to be putting a variaty of people on your network that may or may not know anything about a server, they may or may not break the servers. you need to be able to get these people up and running ASAP if you dont have your own NOC that will be difficult, you will also need to ensure you have the bandwidth needed if al your customers use up the bandwidth allowed thats roughly 300k/sec per customer, 10 customers 3 megs, 100 customers 30 megs and so on. you cant buy bandwidth so you can use it on an if neeed basis you get what you pay for at almost any co-lo facility. basically you must have your own NOC to do this.
Steve
dektong,
Why don't you 'resell' dedi servers for a reputable NOC.
You can make a profit by value adding and getting a BIG discount. Do it under your own domain too.
You will not achieve a 4webspace.com deal, and you would be insane to try. They (he) are capable and have BIG heart/s.
As long as you tell the truth to your customers, not ALL of which have to come from this forum, you can make some money.
Just make sure you can reach the NOC if and when you need to!!!
dektong 01-10-2001, 02:01 AM Thanks Felix,
I was thinking about reselling as you have suggested. But as for the moment, I am still waiting for the reply regarding the dedicated server reselling deal. But reselling is definitely in my priority right now...
Thanks a lot,
cheers,
