View Full Version : Virtual Dedicated Servers
SkidderNetworks 04-16-2002, 08:14 PM Hey guys:
I currently have a trial VDS account with DigiNode. So far I like it, because it's cheap ($50) and gives me much more power then my shared hosting environment (for better or worse, I resell CommuniTech). I'm strongly considering moving some low-activity accounts to it.
The downside is I get one IP, but I can live with that.
I've done a search and there isn't that that much here on VDSes. Does anyone have experiences they'd like to share?
Thanks,
Scott
P.S. WebCP is installed, but no clients will have access to it
JKLIVIN 04-17-2002, 01:20 PM Why not get a small dedicated server with a company that you are familiar with and put a bunch of accounts on it?
Chicken 04-17-2002, 10:39 PM You can also try searching for 'VPS' and 'virtual private servers' and 'VDS' and 'virtual dedicated servers' etc...
afriq 04-18-2002, 06:08 AM There is a product called freeVSD that creates virtual servers. We've tried it out, and wasn't too impressed - so much so that we've removed it.
Feel free to check out http://freevsd.org for more info ...
apollo 04-19-2002, 05:11 AM Once, I found pro vps software that offers Virtual Private Servers... don't remember the URL, but you should find their web site on the web if you search a bit :)
choon 04-22-2002, 07:45 AM Hi SkidderNetworks,
Since you have asked for anyone experiences with VDS...
I have two VDS (Advanced) with them (Diginode) and quite happy with their support and services... although it is not super fast for some issues but I get what I pay for :)
Many times they will go extra miles to install whatever software/package for you if you are not sure... this is not in the standard service that I pay for I believe ;)
If you have any doubts about my experience with them, do not hesitate to contact me via email, PM or ICQ :)
Cheers!
Kindest regards,
Choon
Sebulba 04-27-2002, 06:29 AM I have a VDS (Basic) with Diginode, and I am happy about it.;)
It's cheap and their support is friendly (sometime it is a bit slow).;) But overall it is worth what you spent.

Revelation 04-27-2002, 05:41 PM This is for choon:
What made you decide to go with two advanced diginode VDSes, instead of a dedicated server from another company?
Two of the advanced packages come out to costing:
$160.
This is not to say I hate diginode, but I'd like to find out why you made that decision.
Hello,
I have s Ensim VPS (Web Appliance 3.0) with remarkable hosting.
Support is great there and I receive replies very fast. Just a little expensive in comparison to others (Minimum $79/m).
Minimum account gives a 5% CPU and 128M RAM.
The only thing is that I think (I am not sure) VPS is a little slow in comparison to most of shared reseller accounts. (Am I right?)
On a shread account you have the chance to grab even 100% CPU time sometimes.
Does DGNode gurantee minimum uptime on network and VPS?
Any estimates?

choon 04-28-2002, 01:10 PM Hi Revelation,
At first I try out on their VDS (basic) and due to their service plan... I have to upgrade to VDS (Advanced) in order to host my own name servers on my VDS.
I get my first VDS (Advanced) for about two months (can't remember the actual period) before I ask them to setup another VDS (Advanced) for one of my customers.
I am helping my customer to *manage* this VDS which put it in a simplest way... I get a second VDS (Advanced) account from diginode under my name and resell it to one of my customers where my customer know about I am reselling a VDS to her.
That's all ;)
Thanks.
Kindest regards,
Choon

meballard 04-28-2002, 03:46 PM If memory serves me correctly from reading about VDS systems, the percentage of CPU usage is a minimum guaranteed percentage of the processor, but is burstable to the full CPU usage, as long as it's not being used by other users on the system.
zRedDice 04-28-2002, 06:23 PM VMWare is a piece of software that I love...
It allows you to create multiple instances of any operating systems on any one PC... Its a little bit pricey, but I use it at home (I run Windows, with a Linux Virtual Box inside of it), and it works great. You have to be careful with RAM though, and you lose about 10% of your overall processing power to overhead, but it works wonderfully. If you get a virus in the virtual box, delete important files, screw it up, etc, your computer doesn't stop working.
It would probably work just as well for servers... I've never tried the Linux Host edition.

Apocalypse 04-29-2002, 12:30 PM I have a basic VDS with diginode.net and the thing is great, its quite fast and the CPU seems to be burstable as programs compile pretty fast.
The only thing i dislike is that i cannot get more ip addresses.
im running my primary name server in it using one IP and the secondary on a friend DNS server.
Support has been good and speed/uptime is very good (but ive only been with them for a month)

Vmware is amazing, i run VMware GSX server on a local intranet and VMware workstation on my local computer to run win2k advanced server and Redhat 7.2 using Winxp as the Host OS.
