Hello ppl,

I have been searching and reading web hosting directories and also this forum to find a host that would match my expectations and also the budget.

Requirements:
- 1+, 2+ or even 3+ gb of storage
- 10 GB bandwidth
- linux host
- ow cgi
- probably fast connection
- less than 50$ /month

As you can see, I need a lot of space, but I do not need that much bandwidth. I run a site that has a fair number of subscribers who can / could download binaries. (it is NOT of adult nature, BTW). All legal etc.

It appears to me that a host with the above mentioned features is hard to find. Maybe this category does not even exist. Ok, there are dedicated hosting starting at 99$ /month, and some hosting services that provide some 500 megs storage. Still, I can hardly find any companies between these two categories.

Here are the two servers that might be considered:
- http://www.cwihosting.com - I've read some bad remarks on their uptime and hacked system somewhere on this forum. Have they been serving ok since then?
- http://www.1000megs.com - have not done feedback search on them. Just emailed them with some questions.

Any other suggestions? Or, should I think about investing a littler more and signing up for a dedicated server?

All comments are welcome.

Rdx.

Well if you can shell out 1-4k for a server. I only know of one place that ya can get 10GB of transfer and rackspace for $55.00 for co-location. About the only other option I have seen that's low is 4webspace.com .

Hello
I think the problem for any host here would be that your site would dominate a machine.

With a 10GB hard drive you would be using a third of it which then couldn't be used for other sites. This would mean charging you more, which would make a dedicated server a much more realistic idea.

Hei rdx,

I am working on my webserver right now which--I hope--will be ready no later than early February. My server will have about at least 30 Gigs of HD (thinking about having multiple HD of the same size). As for me, HD is never be the problem and since it's much cheaper than bandwith charge, I think I will be able to share my HD space with you. In fact, I am thinking about offering web hosting service where I will mainly charge for the bandwith usage and not how much space (within reason) my clients need (what do other people think about this?). Contact me if you need more info.

cheers,

Actually I am looking for someone to split a raq3 from 4webspace.net. Email vflashes@hotmail.com if interested.

You get

5 GB Storage
50 GB Bandwidth :)

Hello all,

Thank you very much for all those inputs. Hope that flaming will not destroy this topic.

GordonH: I am not really up-to-date with harddisks, but obviously there are disks with 30 GB capacity. Of course your point still stands.

dektong and synergy: thx for your offers, we could discuss things. Still, for my accounting records I need invoices, and also, I have to be able to pay using creditcard. I do not live in the US, not even in a country approved by PayPal.

dektong: you actually recapitulated my question: why is that hosting companies do not have you pay for bandwidth only, instead, they impose storage barriers. Maybe we should consider GordonH's response here.

rdx,

I recommend posting your e-mail address ... that way certain companies will be able to e-mail their offers directly to you so they don't break forum rules. ;)

Vincent,

Ok, I have set my profile so that hosting services could reach me via email.

Still, this topic could be of interest for a couple of people using the board, and they might like to see the scenario, too.

Of course, there are hosts that offer unlimited everything - storage included - but it needless to say on this forum that there are more limitations on unlimited features than in any other package. I am happy that jtan is not unlimited anymore :)

regards,

rdx.

Yes, we switched over to limits a few months ago for the ProWeb account. We have much more feasible limits now. :)
