View Full Version : Uhhhhhhhghhh Format time

Whoooo... I'm BACK! The computer was acting up so I decided to format the C. Whooo. What a pain in the *bleep*.

First, I did this since the computer decided to start taking 20-30 second breaks from doing anything every few minutes or so. Really annoying.

Click on a folder in Explorer. 30 second delay. Click a link, 30 second delay. Did I mention that it was *really* annoying?

Also, it gave me errors when I tried to defrag the C, thus I never did it. Not enough memory? I found this hard to believe since the machine has 128 MB of RAM. So maybe it was due to the 27 Gig HD? Well they sell bigger ones than that, and really that is almost standard now right?

So I decide to attempt to split the drive and create a partition. Something I know nothing about. Well it worked but when I tried to load win95 on it just kept saying some error and that I'd have to reboot, which lead back to the same error.

Safe Mode? Same error. Bahhhhhhhhhhh!

So I installed win98 upgrade over it and voila! Here I am.

Approx. 9 hours later with 1/2 the programs installed. I love sitting here and clicking, "I accept", about a million times.

not to mention I can't find my old verison of ICQ 98a (I hate the new version (resource sucker), but GOOD NEWS! I found that handy dandy Favorites link copier if any one wants it. Really glad to have that back!

Moan, bitch, moan, bitch. I just had to vent. Thank you for scrolling down to the bottom and not reading the middle. :)

Where our motto is either, "if you haven't seen that blue screen in 5 hours, you're way past due", or "Yeah sure you can multitask. But if you try to run more than one program simultaneously, you are going to crash."

Yes, I *should* be with the wifey, but I'm trying to get a site up as well and trying to design was getting really annoying.

I'll shoot you the URL/file Kunal if you'd like. Basically it just adds three options to the menu when you right click on one of your favorites:

Copy URL (copies the URL of the favorite)
Copy Link (copies the favorite as a link, good for throwing sites from your favorites folder into web pages)
Copy Name (which is less useful, -copies the name of the favorite)

I've had exactly 1 computer crash/freeze up with win2k pro in 8-9 months. I never made it to 8 months without reformat and reinstall with win9x. Plus quake and unreal tournament work great with win2k, hence no reason to go back.

I wonder if I can go a year without reformatting??? That would be soooooo nice!!! I definitely recommend win2k over win9x ANY DAY! :D

It's already 2001... Isn't Microsoft going to make something like Win01 anytime soon?

Technically they have with the Millenium edition, considering this year is the true first year of the millenium. :D

They actually do have something called "Windows Whistler" out. The Beta is out though.

If you really want ICQ98a I'm sure I can find it in my vast archive Chicken, if so then give me a shout.

Just checked and the earliest I have got it 99b

My experience with WindowsME hasn't been entirely salubrious. I'd suggest staying with Win98SE for the moment.

I can't find it. Thinking of asking Carl for the version he has, but I've just downloaded and installed the 2000 one. I really don't like it, never did (and think I might have deleted the 98a one thinking 2000 was better). Ohhh well.

Good to know someone has an older version is this one starts getting to me.

Or do what I do. Stick with Win 98 and just grab a 'ME' theme to put over it. Looks just like the spanking new one then :)

Noticed a question about reformatting elsewhere. I just reformatted my drive and did a fresh install last night. Win 95 (upgraded to 98) running for almost a year and a half without a reformat. Things were finally starting to get a little slow when I had Dreamweaver, IE 5.5 Outlook Express and Photoshop 5.02 running all at the same time. (Compaq Armada (laptop) 366 PII - 96 meg RAM)

Just learn to look after your Windows and keep that maintainence up and it runs just fine. I'll keep it over Linux or BeOS anytime. At least Windows installs on this box. :)

Partition Commander!

I don't know why I said that, particularly. I just like shouting it every now and then.

There's nothing worse than when you're at a party full of crowded people and you suddenly feel the compunction to yell "DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEFRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG!" or "Norton Anti-Virus" when someone sneezes and you think they have a cold.

This is absolutely true.

God, I just love misplaced modifiers... lol.
