I am curious as to how much bandwidth is push through the average web server. Can anyone who has dedicated servers please post the amount of bandwidth that you run a month, (also the # of clients on the system)I am curious and am trying to see what my costs “might” be when I move from Rackshack. I can not go by my usage as I am sharing the server with a friend.

I know that the numbes are going to vary greatly but it is only to give me a rough idea.

Thank you

One of the sites I work on is on dedicated machine now and it's educational. We get a lot of traffic during specific times a year, but it's hard to pinpoint. It depends on museum showings, fieldtrips, and competitions. :) It's not multimedia heavy, really just text and images. And the biggy is a discussion board.

And we don't use more than 2 GB of bandwidth during our usual months. If we get featured or a presentation is done, we use a lot more. :)

And we're working on a series of additions for a museum, which means more hits.

Just wanted to add that I know someone who uses rackshack and she runs a series of Entertainment websites, which are Multimedia heavy, so she probably goes right up to her limit. Depends on your site really.

Depends on your site really actually in my case it depends on my clients sites:D

the reason is I am trying to figure out if I can afford to host in Canada, near Montreal where I can lay hands on the server if needed, or at Tera-byte.

Don't get me wrong Tera-byte looks good, but Alberta is a long way to go to fix a computer :(

My friend has a tera-byte dedicated server. He charges his friends to use it LOL. They're good though. I visit this site a lot and there usually isn't any downtime. It's a good bargain for a dedicated machine.

In terms of fixing it, they should fix it if there's a hard drive failure. As a dedicated server, you should have root access and stuff so you've okay in terms of fixing apache or adding new software, no?

if I was going to stay on dedicated, but I want to own my own servers so I can set them up how I want with the hardware I want. That is why I need to have them close to home. Also if you are renting and something happens with the company you lose everything, if you colo you just have them shipped back to you.

about 100 gigs a month per server. Very rough estimate.

Average per site is less than half a gig (but this is HIGHLY dependant on who you market through). Sites I sell on Ebay tend to average LESS sites that were sold through a forum link at Anandtech.com tend to average a good bit MORE. Though very few use more than they're sold, or even half of it.
