View Full Version : OnlineNIC Resellers...please read!
Hi All,
Would appreciate any help with this!
We are an onlinenic domain reseller and are having trouble setting up the script to connect to their back end.
We have installed it exactly as per their instructions.
Everything seems to work fine, from member signup to admin features, etc; EXCEPT for the domain search function!
The error message generated is as follows:
13
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry, An Error Occurred! The error message is :
Failed to connect to register server!Permission denied
Their tech support while extremely helpful and quick to respond doesnt seem to be very knowledgable. They suggested we reinstall the template system following their instructions. (Which is exactly what we had done in the first place).
If anyone has prior experience using their backend or can help with this, please post here.
Thank you all!
Dylan 04-16-2002, 10:50 PM :D
tell me, were you able to successfully add funds to your onlinenic reseller account? did you use your credit card?
No! I havent done that yet! Im not going to add any funds without having the system setup properly first!
Dylan 04-16-2002, 11:15 PM please let me know if you get that far, once you've sorted out the above problem of course :D
Can I ask why the big grin? And any reason in particular why you are asking this?
Is there something I should be aware off? Maybe you can share your experiences so far?
Thanks!
Dylan 04-17-2002, 12:03 AM Ok, well this is what happened to me, so I can't vouch for anybody else...
I signed up over 2 weeks ago. My reseller account was activated and enabled so that I can add funds using my credit card. I try numerous times (also alternating between the 4 x $ amounts) and each time their system spits out "bank refuses" or something like that. I can see that their script isn't even attempting to connect to their merchant/bank to authorize the transaction. I email the chap that handles the accounts and he tells me to contact my bank to find out what happened to me ( dude, nothing has happened to me) or I can wire funds to them (there is noway I will wire funds to them, too expensive). I phone my bank and they say nobody has attempted to authorize any transactions. I email the chap at onlinenic again and tell him that the problem is on their end. No reply. I email him (and support) again and ask them to manually process the transaction. No reply. So, I email this other person that used to reply to my pre-sales questions. She (at least I think so) tells me that the person that handles the accounts is away for business and that I must phone their sales line to try and get hold of him. (What? Do they have follow me? Nope! The thing is always on voicemail. Do they only have 1 or 2 people working for the company - not just because of this, but support never replies to your emails, and if they do, it's always the same 2 people?) A few days later I receive a virus from the accounts chap. He must be back and obviously read his emails. Try to email him, his email bounces. And between all this, I've received numerous AD mails from them.
Need I say more?

About a month a go we experienced "bank refuses" error. But after emailing their support email, everything's fine. It looks like they switched merchant account.
So far, we have registered 76 domains with them. And we are quite happy.
Hi anto,
That sounds a lot more encouraging!
Have you setup their backend script? Is it working fine for you? Can you tell me the url to your site where you have this setup? Any idea why I might be getting the error mentioned above?
Thanks & Regards
brandon 04-17-2002, 05:07 PM I also had a problem when adding fund last month. I don't really like their design for adding fund. First time when I add fund, the screen freeze then I try click submit again it still freeze for about 5 min. I thought the system rejected my CC but thats not the case. Finally, I noticed that I have two Confirm Email from them that I was changed for the same amount twice. Be careful, check your email even if your submit is not successful!
Yeah! I phoned them twice, they returned my call after an hour. Same person (a Chinese guy). I email to them too, and they respond to my ticket after 4 hours (Not too bad). Unfortunately, they reverse the charge twice leaving me a negative balance account, and I couldn't register any names at that time. They email me and told me to added fund, but I was reluctant to do so, not I until I check my CC center to confirm.
Re: Installation, still working on it, and is still on testing stage.
I honestly, don't like the transfer registrant fee: USD30.00 and they doesn't allow you to change the registrant in their system.
Still considering whether to go ahead with them.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
If I may, where have you seen this $30.00 fee for registrant transfer?
Thanks & Regards.
brandon 04-17-2002, 06:12 PM If I may, where have you seen this $30.00 fee for registrant transfer?
That is why, I was not aware until I sold a domain recently and need to transfer the registrant.
Just login to your account and find the menu--->
Transfer Domains [?]
Transfer Registrar
Transfer Registrant <--------
Check Status
Good luck

Yes, you can change registrant contact, organization, address ect, but NOT the registrant - the very top line. I assumed the registrant is YOUR NAME and NOT the Organization.
:confused:Can you change the registrant? I love to please teach me how.
Thank you.

WildHunter 04-17-2002, 08:01 PM Hello People,
I have few questions about Onlinenic, I would appreciate if any one can answer them for me :)
I am looking into domain reselling, basically I want to add this service in my existing site (and services). Every thing looks good (well overall). I went through some site which use Onlinenic as a registrar and the only concern is they expect you (as a user) to pay upfront, create an account and then use it as you go. I mean this is not really attractive, it would be easier if payment is added in the registration process - just charge them on CC. As yet its not clear (from their side) whether this can be done, though I don't see why not.
Have any of you added the payment process (Credit Card) in the registration process??? If yes, would you mind giving me some suggestions - who to use and some tips would be nice. You can PM or e-mail me if you like.
Thanks so much for your help and time !!!
Cheers :D
brandon 04-17-2002, 08:20 PM Quoted from their site:
You can add funds using your credit card or via bank transfer. For credit card payments fill out the form below. NOTE: Considering the cost involved during the credit card transaction process, $1 will be charged as the processing fee if you pay less than $20 in one transaction. If you pay $20 or more than $20 per transaction, no fee will be charged. For bank transfers, use the following information

You have to pay $1 extra if payment is under $20.00, I guess it is not worth to them if you register 1 at a time because of CC charges.

I just check it with my account. Yes, you are right. We cannot change the registrant name. From the onlinenic page:
Note: Domain owner/registrant can not be modified. If you want to modify this field, you must transfer the domain to its new registrant, according to the rules of ICANN. For detailed information, contact transfer support.
Since we are in webhosting business and all of our clients who transferred their domains to us never asked this, we never change the registrant name.
Thanks.
Guys,
I'm not affiliated with onlinenic. I'm just one of their resellers.
However, one thing that I really like from them is, their script allow me to offer my visitors to do live register at my site without using credit cards.
Visitors just sign their selves. Pay me with a bank transfer. After that I just give them credits (according to how much they pay). And they will be able to register domains lively so that there will be no delay in registering their domains.
Is there any other ICANN registrars that allow resellers to do the same thing as I do with onlinenic?
brandon 04-17-2002, 08:56 PM Since we are in webhosting business and all of our clients who transferred their domains to us never asked this, we never change the registrant name.
Yeah! thats true if you are in webhosting, but I register and sell them. I cannot transfer away from them for the first 60 days. I have difficulties selling domains if there is a $30 fee for tranfer of registrant.

Update/FYI
I was able to add funds without any problems at all! Just did that 15 minutes back! Already registered 5 domains, everything went smoothly. Im too tired now, but will work on the backend to connect to their system tomorrow. Will let you know how that goes!
Regards.

Add fund: you mean adding fund in the Onlinenic system or in your website? If in your site, what cc payment gateway are you using?
Please keep us posted of your progress.
Sorry for the delay! I though I had subscribed to this thread!
I meant adding to onlinenics interface, not on my site. For adding to my site, I will be offering paypal and credit card payments through 2checkout.
As far as installing the backend is concerned, Im still stuck at the same position. (Check my original post!)
Good luck!

Did you know that OnlineNIC had changed the their test site?
It now is:
Onlinenic Server: www.onlinenic.com
Server Port: 80 Reseller ID: 219474
Password: 123456
You have to login as an admin, then change the "system setting" to the above.
Let me know if this helps.
Thanks! Footprint I love you!
Will keep you guys updated on everything. Thats the problem with their support, if they had just told me this, instead of telling my server is crappy, etc. I would have gone live years ago.
Regards.
Jumped the gun a bit too fast there! Still no go! :(

footprints 05-02-2002, 05:59 PM Same err msg? It's slow though.
Do you have it some where that I can take a look at?
sas386 05-04-2002, 11:25 AM Hi WebHozt
Any luck/progress?
Samantha
Not yet, Ive been a little busy with some other things. Anyway I have sent a PM to footprints, hopefully he will be able to help with some things.

Thanks. It worked. Then I tested renewing a domain and this is what I got:
"(209) Renewal failed. The network speed is too slow. Please try again later."
Hmmm. Never had that trouble with bulkregister.
Was that a fluke of the test system or is that a regular occurance?
Seems I can't even download the software without paying in advance, so if it doesn't go well, I guess I'm out some dough. As a web host, I do not want to sell their add-on URL redirecting services, etc. Just domain registrations and transfers. Is this easily possible by modifying their script?
How easy is it to interface their script with my payment processor? (LinkPoint HTML)??

This is straight from them. By the way, the ownership info is normally changeable for no charge when using other ICANN registrars with reseller programs. >>
If you wish to transfer the ownership (change registrant name) for a domain already registered under OnlineNIC, you will need to print and fill out this form following the directions below. US$30 will be charged for each domain transfer registrant.
To successfully complete this form, you will need the WHOIS record for the domain name. The WHOIS database can be found at URL http://www.onlinenic.com
Be sure all fields are completed in full.
Once this form is complete, verify the information, read it, sign it and date it.
An individual that has the apparent authority to legally bind the current Registrant must sign this form in the presence of a Notary Public. The Notary Public is required to notarize this form.
An individual that has the apparent authority to legally bind the new Registrant must also sign this form. Notarization is not required for the new Registrant's signature.
Make a copy of the Agreement for your records, then send it to OnlineNIC Inc at 2315 26th Ave. San Francisco, CA 94116 USA.

I think I will transfer away to where I can change the registrant and add 3 year on the top.:D
mpkapadia 05-05-2002, 06:31 AM Hello All
We have so far registered over 100 domains with them and are happy,
I have noticed that transfers to onlinenic hardly ever fail. I have had problems transfering to dotregistrar and stargate sometimes
Also since their tech support is handled from china it works to our advantage as we being in India can get support during daytime.
I have used stargate, bulkregister, netsol , dotregistrar so far and their support is best so far
Only thing i would want to have changed is that in their end user control panel ( Dont remember url for that now) the domain owners should be able to change name server information.
They can currently change only tech/admin/billing contact.
I mailed them a couple of times about this but i guess they are too big / busy to pay heed to me.
Maybe we all should mail to them about this.
Overall they are good , though they are not our single registrar, still use others at times.
Regards,

It is truly unbelievable that they forgot to include a way to change dns information! But then again, others, like bulkregister, don't have an end user control panel. I rate onlinenic's documentation on installing their reseller interface, especially for Linux, as 5 thumbs down. :(
Dylan 05-05-2002, 09:41 PM what surprises me is that onlinenic's API is still in beta
or am I thinking of some other registrar?
rockman 05-05-2002, 10:30 PM You are correct. It is still in beta.
Choppy 05-07-2002, 10:40 PM One thing to be careful from ONLINENIC is this!
NOTE: Please make sure your domain name meet both the two requirements:
2) The domain name should have 5-year extension from its current Date.
If your customer decides they want to become a PRIVATE LABEL reseller or something like that you do not have the option to create them there own private nameservers...
THIS SUCKS big time if you ask me...
Yes, but thats only if you want your own private nameservers registered from the registrars end.
You can always have your nameservers set up manually at the server end.
Regards.
rockman 05-07-2002, 11:02 PM Did I read that right? Clients must renew domains for a minimum of 5 years??
Only if you want nameservers registered at the registrars end!
Regards.
sas386 05-08-2002, 05:11 AM Hi WebHozt
How are things with the OnlineNIC API? Bugs ironed out? Any chance of your site going live soon?
About the 5 year "requirement", it seems that, as you pointed out, one needs to register a domain for 5+ years to use OnlineNIC's DNS servers. If a reseller/end-user uses his own name servers, then the 5 year requirement doesn't apply.
Incidentally, would you happen to know whether a reseller can pre-populate his own DNS servers (via the API) for use by his customers?
Thanks.
Samantha
Hi,
Currently we are working on other things, I would expect to have the API setup latest by June 15th (If possible!)
Incidentally, would you happen to know whether a reseller can pre-populate his own DNS servers (via the API) for use by his customers?
Err...what exactly did you mean by that? If you could have default name servers set to:
ns1.youdefine.com
ns2.youdefine.com
instead of ns.onlinenic.com etc? Is that it? Supposedly, YES! However, since we havent got the API running yet...I cant confirm whether that works.
Or was your question regarding something else?
Regards.
rockman 05-08-2002, 07:46 AM Good to know that I'd be able to use my own nameservers without being affected by the 5 year thing. Now all I need to do is figure out how to install the beta! Anyone know what you do with the mysql.sql "script"? We're running RedHat.
Thanks
mpkapadia 05-08-2002, 08:20 AM has anyone of you tried creating name server hosts on onlinenic

Here is how the onlinenic's templates looks
Everything work fine, but a bit slow.
The adminstration username and password stay the same.
but you can try live reg as it is only for testing.
The mysql.sql is a script for you to create the database.

The mysql.sql is a script for you to create the database. The problem I have with mysql.sql is the extension, .sql. What is that? What am I missing? For example, there is an excellent free support desk called Perl Desk that comes with a .pl (perl) script, which automatically sets up all the tables in a MySql db that you'd first set up. But that is a perl file with the extension, .pl. How did you run mysql.sql?
Thanks for the other info. I'll take a peek at it.
What I did to setup the database was I copied all the text from the mysql.sql file and pasted into phpmyadmin where you run the sql commands, that setup the database just fine!
Regards.
rockman 05-08-2002, 06:53 PM Cool. I'll have to check that out. Do wish they provided some documentation.

rockman 05-08-2002, 11:35 PM I made the trip to your site and I see what you mean by slow. The whois seems to be the culprit. I tried the interface, and I couldn't get the form to hold the password.
Thanks for the tip on the file. I'll try it soon although I've never used that php program.
The FAQ says the system requirements for their API is MySQL 7.0 or above. MySQL 7+??

I actually thought about upgrading for a sec, until I realized there is no such thing. :stickout
Anyone know how their cloaked URL forwarding service work? I've seen it done with "invisible" frames. But then the URL doesn't change when the user navigates through the site...
Can you sell e-mail and URL forwarding through the API, or do you manually add it?

WebHozt,
I was under the impression that nameservers could only be registered through the registrar where the second level domain is registered. Is there another way to do it? Or am I misunderstanding you?
thewitt 06-12-2002, 09:19 AM The only way to get your nameservers added to the zone files is through the registrar who manages your domain name.
I'm not sure what the comment above means.

Chrisliu 06-14-2002, 07:21 PM I don't like onlinenic.com because $30 for transfer is too high and can't register namerserver.
brandon 07-17-2002, 02:42 AM Lately I have some problem when my clients told me that they are receiving email that was afew days old. And also that they updated their site and found that it was the old page that they were having. I did a tracert on their domain and found that it was the old dns. It was very surprise to me because I changed the dns for them a few weeks ago. It should have resolved long time. I also make sure it did before I pass on. The trouble is that it switches back and forth and most of the time I checked it was the new dns.
I went to onlineNic site and check on what I have entered for dns1 & dns2, No problem they listed the new mydns1 and mydns2. But when I try to update the changes again, I noticed that the ns2.olddns.com appears again.
Domain name domain.com Original DNS ns2.olddns.com => New DNS ns1.mydns.com
Thus I realized that eventhough it displays the new dns, OnlineNIC didn't actually updated the dns for us. (Some programming bug here).
I will report to their support after this post.
Good Luck, just to let everyone using onlineNic aware of this if you do make dns changes. FYI, two of the domains were like this.

Hi how can you setup nameservers manually at Server end?
I need nameservers for the Resellers.
Last time Onlinenic had policy of 10 years for NameServers registration, which i initiated emails with them, protested, gave example of other Registrars, follow-up and could make them come down to 5 years :stickout
I tried for minimum 2-3 yrs but could not ;)
Maybe you all guys also give them feedback and hope it helps :)
I still use their Website to Register domains, they told me new version of API would be coming, so i thought better spend my time with that rather than wasting time with this current beta :)
mk123 10-23-2002, 08:23 AM Ok .. time to Celebrate!!
Latest update guys!!
Onlinenic don't have the previous binding of 5 years for Registering Nameservers.
So you can update Nameservers nice and easy with 1 year domain. (Thanks Chily & Peppers @ Onlinenic for listening to Suggestions :D)
So check out the New Template of theirs and their prices.
Keep nice work Onlinenic, this way :)
mpkapadia 10-24-2002, 09:46 AM Now only thing that they should allow is change of ownership for free

ps: is 2checkout compatible with their API? Does domain get registered automaticly upon the creditcard funds withdrawal, or do I have to authorize it manualy after receiving order confirmation from 2checkout?
thanks!

Hello,
I use a Template 3 [onlinenic], but I don't know how to correct
"Home" (http://tourismbg.com/templates/index.php) page . When I click on link "Home" (http://tourismbg.com/templates/index.php) I see empty page. Probably there is a way in "Home" page to insert a information for the company or prices for registration of domains? Are someone knows how???
Thank you for all answers !!!
