View Full Version : ARIN, IP allocation, and rDNS?

Hi,

I recently leased a new dedicated box and loaded it with a small handful of sites, none of which are returning rDNS. I contacted my provider about it, who responded with the following:

"The only way that ARIN will allow for us to direct the Reverse DNS to your server is to have a /24 or larger."

I'm quite familiar with the 80% usage rule, but no rDNS on blocks smaller than a /24?

Can anyone confirm or refute this, and/or point me to any relevant documentation?

TIA

Bah, another host that doesn't know about classless in-addr.arpa delegation. It IS possible. I'm surprised so many places don't know how to do this! It's so simple. Here's an RFC for it: http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2317.txt

I could be wrong, but I've never heard that ARIN had any such rules.

Like ToastyX said, they probably just don't know how. If they don't know how to delegate you to manage the infratructure DNS for your IP addresses, you can provide them with instructions.

More than likely they'll just say that they don't allow it. Our ISP doesn't allow it. We just have to request that they make changes to the zone files when we need them. They're rather speedy.
