View Full Version : How Many sites?
viGeek 04-16-2002, 12:57 AM Just bought a Dedicated server from rackshack.net, the pentium 4 1.7 ghz, 7200 dual 60gb hard drives, and 1GB of memory.
I will be the sole users of the server, minus about 10 of my friends/family im setting up space for.
Whats the most amount of sites this server could handle.
Considering all sites will be pretty basic, and optimized for fast loading times.
porcupine 04-16-2002, 01:18 AM im starting a small business, a convinience store downtown, how many people will visit a day? If you can accurately predict that, you can also accurately state how many websites your server will handle :), in other words, theres no magical number here or anything of that nature.
just curious, is that dual 60 gig drive setup with RAID, and if so, what type (0,1)?, or do they jsut give you 2 drives?

Take your length of string. Halve it, then double that amount. That should give you the answer. ;)
afriq 04-16-2002, 08:06 AM On a serious note, you should be able to run a couple of hundred sites on that type of server. But only if they are all low-traffic sites with mostly static content.
StevenG 04-16-2002, 08:09 AM At least 250 static sites - a lot more if they don't pull too much traffic - a lot more. You will know when to stop adding accounts :-)
on side note P4 for web server == sux
my 2c
JKLIVIN 04-16-2002, 11:05 AM P4==sux why do you say that? just wanting to get a post in there, or do you have something to add? My partners and I have a Windows server with roughly the same specs as above with a P4 and have about 320 sites on it.
yeah i'd like to know why you say the P4 isnt good for web servers as well... intend to purchase a couple of P4 systems soon :)
well, the Pentium 4 is a performance chip, it's engineered to bring out performance in multimedia apps etc.. it even says so on intel's site, If i had the choice between P4 and P3, I'd go P3, they've proven themselves worthy in that regard.

I'm using both P3's and P4's, and all of them are doing just fine!
But only get a P4 if it will cost you the same (or less) than the Compaq DL-320's that RS have on sale.
I guess we're all saying that you should not spend more just for the sake of getting a P4 ...
