View Full Version : yipes bandwidth pricing??
I have seem someone offering 450GB of yipes bandwidth for$109 and 10Mbps for $300. I wonder how they do it?? Is yipes bandwidth price really low and almost match cogent's pricing?? I know rackshack offers similar deal. But they uses cogent which I can see how it works.
I never got a quote from yipe. But could someone point out how much is yipes regular pricing and how low have you ever got a quote from them?

Cogent is only one of RackShacks providers, and not even their primary. http://www.rackshack.net/aboutus/networks.asp
ClusterMania 04-16-2002, 02:52 AM Yipes is more like $3000 for 10Mbps. I got that quote many months ago though.
jayglate 04-16-2002, 03:02 AM Of course cogent is rackshacks primary. It uses the most BW out of any of the connections.
meballard 04-16-2002, 03:36 AM I wouldn't call that making Cogent RS's primary, especially when you consider the 10mbps unmetered plans (which are the only ones that solely use Cogent). The amount of bandwidth being used on Cogent is only slightly higher than the other Gig-E connections, on outgoing only, which can probably largely be accounted for by the unmetered connections, but considering that RS's total usage of bandwidth between the three Gig-Es would easily be handled by two, with no disparate difference between the providers, it could hardly be considered primary.

I don't know about that. Headsurfer claims RackShack has never used primarily Cogent. He and a few other people got really annoyed at me for saying RackShack uses mostly Cogent in another thread, even though I distinctly remember the graphs showing over half of the outgoing traffic going through Cogent a few months ago, but RackShack has since upgraded their network considerably so I can no longer prove this.

If you can call 80 Mbps (over 360 used in TW and 330 in Verio) slightly higher, then yes, its slightly higher :)

Hmm.. So Yipes is not that cheap after all. But how could they afford such huge difference. I mean webreseller.net doesnt seem to offer any cogent at all. All traffic would be routed through yipes. Thats what they claim. They even include a server and free kernel upgrades..etc.
dektong 04-16-2002, 04:29 AM Being very curious about this, I checked out their MRTG graphs. Their monthly average (outgoing only) for all the lines is about 670.5 Mbps, 234.5 Mbps out of which is due to Cogent.
So we can say that 35% of Rackshack bandwith is Cogent. Whether this is considered "primarily" Cogent, I leave it up to you to decide.
cheers,

skylab 04-16-2002, 05:15 AM sweet tomatoes yipes is fast!
i'm on a 600/300 cable line in europe and every test i run from home on a yipes line is blazing.
including webreseller's speed test files!
BiGWill 04-16-2002, 07:54 AM yeah, yipes is really blazin' fast.
got 600kb/s from my server in Europe which is just awesome ...
and from home i got the max. of 92kb/s ... very nice :)
greets
RobbertC 04-16-2002, 11:13 AM From here my tracert to webreseller.net crosses the atlantic with Level 3, and then goes to Yipes.
But, it's faster than Cogent.
emoore 04-16-2002, 11:14 AM YIPES runs about $250-300 per M on a 10M commitment and gets in the $150 range on a large 500M commitment.
As for their network, remember that YIPES bandwidth is mostly Level3 Bandwidth. Yipes filed bankruptcy protection to protect themselves from being cut off by Level3 and Genuity. If they are under bankruptcy protection, Level3 and Genuity can not turn them off in the middle of the night.
I have heard this from a reliable inside source at Level3.
headsurfer 04-16-2002, 12:05 PM PLEASE, have your facts straignt when you speak of Rackshack. Cogent is one of our providers, this is true.
Cogent is only one of three Gig-es that we have. The traffic across each of the gigs is roughly equal although not exactly equal. Cogent has about 100 Megs of additional traffic that is designated "Cogent preferred", which is our unmetered 10 Mb deals.
We also have a OC3 to Savvis and a DS-3 to ELI.
We also have another Gig-e that should be in by the end of the month.

skylab 04-16-2002, 12:12 PM what are your comments on yipes headsurfer? if you have one.
I'm also pretty impressed with Yipes speed and reliability. Webreseller dare to claim a 99.99% uptime for their network uptime.
I'm interested to hear more about Yipes bankruptcy filing. Would that affect their existing contracts with their clients (such as Webreseller)?
webreseller 04-17-2002, 03:33 PM Yipes is a great network and we offer a 99.9999% :) The market we are in is one of Yipes largest markets.. Have no worries...
Webreseller, I sent you two pms several days ago with no response. I didn't back them up in my Sent folder. Could you please check your private box and reply to those two pms now?
webreseller 04-17-2002, 03:58 PM Checking now...
skylab 04-17-2002, 04:02 PM yes, yipes is amazing from europe. i've gone and tested a few other sites connected with yipes. great great pings, traceroutes, and speed tests. i'm very impressed.
if you can take a look at that email i sent you through WHT yesterday webreseller and email me back with what you think. that would be great. there's no hurry of course.
Fiber 04-18-2002, 08:50 PM Wow, I must say I just did a trace route, it goes from Frontier, to GBLX to Level3 then to Yipes.
So, it should be fast.
skylab 04-19-2002, 02:59 AM my traveroutes from europe come CHELLO > LEVEL3 > YIPES. in a startling 18 hops and 99ms!
of course. it's dead in the US at the moment and it's pretty early here also.
jinkies!
apollo 04-19-2002, 03:25 AM Well their network is good but I am a bit afraid of that bankruptcy filing.....
skylab 04-19-2002, 03:50 AM yeah.
sad news. but, there's hopes of them pulling it off and it seems most of the people who have done business with them or have agreements with yipes are standing behind them. we'll see.
