Nothing special about this offer.. you can get a FREE domain from many web hosting companies when you sign up with them.

But I suppose their advertising worked well if many people flock to this promotion and then figure... "oh well, I'm here now for my cheap domain, so I may as well get hosting too."

I see their control panel is improving. At least the lock feature is now visable and they offer private whois although expensive.

Posters in these cheap Yahoo threads usually fall into 1 of 2 categories.

1) Those who post regulations showing that the offer is a) limited to 1 domain b) limited to 1 year and/or c) requires hosting.

2) Those that have actually done it and a) registered multiple domains b) registered for multiple years and c) didn't buy hosting to get the discount price.

I expect that I can renew next year at Yahoo's regular rate of $9.95. I have not tried to transfer out but the Yahoo site & other threads here indicate that it is no longer the complicated process that it was early this year.

About 6PM yesterday I decided to try my first domain purchase with yahoo which was a .ORG extentsion domain name. They advertised the price as USD 2.99, well it's pretty cheap so I paid by CC online.

The worst thing is they've got hidden charges. USD 2.99 is about MYR 11.40. When I checked my online banking account which my CC is tied to I found out a MYR 15.23 last charged. I called up my bank immediately requesting for the last charged amount and by whom. The bank told me that yahoo billed me USD 1.00 and USD 2.99 separately.

I've emailed yahoo customer support already and till now it's more than 12 hours there's no reply from them on any explanation where did the USD 1.00 came from. I'm pretty sure it's a hidden charges. As in the bill and invoice they issued to me it's only stated USD 2.99.

Another thing is their activation for domain is so hell long... If your in webhosting business you would know customers all want immediate domain name activation. Luckly I didn't tried it out on my customer's domain. I was making a personal domain purchase for my upcoming project. It has been more than 15 hours already and I still can't access my domain control panel to make changes for the nameservers.

DAMN YAHOO! Tell your friends all about their hidden charges and super slow activation and bad customer support!

1 USD = MYR 3.8X
MYR 15.23 = 3.99 - 4.01 USD
USD 2.99 = MYR 11.35 - 11.37

It has been more than 20 hours now. If they used the USD 1.00 as verification purpose it would already have been deposited back into my credit card by now. I know like 1and1.com domain name they do that. But I've not read anything about this from yahoo when placing my order.

Yahoo finally replied me after more than 6 hours...

Hello Amos,

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Domains.

After reading your email, I understand that you have purchased a new
domain name and not able to access it from your Yahoo! Domains account,
also you are having an issue regarding the billing of your domain
"teachware.org".

If you continue to have problems with this issue, we would like to
investigate in further detail. For us to look into the problem you have
encountered, it will be necessary for Yahoo! staff to enter your account
and conduct some tests.

Please reply to this message, giving Yahoo! permission to enter your
Yahoo! Domains account and take those steps necessary to pinpoint the
cause of this problem and explore possible solutions.

Seems like their system is buggy... I've granted them to access my account and I'm now waiting for their second reply. On why I'm not able to access my domain control panel even after it's already activated.

Animorphs, this also happened to me. The USD1.00 charge isn't actually charged - it's 'authorisation'-only, as Bashar suggested. You haven't been charged for this amount, but you can't use it, for the time beeing. I am absolutely sure you'll NOT see it in your monthly statement.

What I really need is a complete control over everything. The best CP in the industry (at least of what I've seen) is that of RegisterFly. Too bad their support is even worse than that of Yahoo's. I'll move most probably to DirectI as I have a reseller account there.

After four days of trying I finally had my questions answered by Yahoo Support. Dmaven and Bashar, please feel free to say "I told you so". :) I won't be renewing but will still consider using them to get cheap first year registrations on new domains. Now to test transfering out.

* There is no option to renew domains in your control panel. Yahoo will automatically renew the domain one month before expiry using your credit card on file.

* Renewal cost is the current price per domain at that time, usually the original cost of $9.95

Wait, it gets even worse. As far as I understand, your card would be charged EVEN IF YOU'VE TRANSFERRED OUT. You need explicitly REMOVE THE DOMAINS FROM YOUR ACCOUNT.

wow this is real cool! how much do you have to pay when you transfer your domain out to other registrar from yahoo? say like you transfer months before your domain expires. i browse through the agreement thing and they didn't state anything on this. only something that they will deduct 9.95$ one month before the domain expires.

what do you mean by explicitly remove the domains? do you mean i have to cancel my domain at yahoo and let it expire and re-register it at other registrar?

You can register as many domains as you want. People have been arguing about it forever, but it is a fact. They have this listed on their site as well. Also, they do not require hosting. Personally, I haven't used their hosting, but I have bought domains at 1.99, 4.98 and 2.99 from them without difficulty, over several months. I have all of them hosted on my own server and their control panel is very easy to use. They don't give you the option of setting up nameservers on a domain that you have registered (but you can change your nameservers at any time, very easilty). In my experience, all names become active and available within a few hours, which is far better than often happens.

There are a few concerns that you need to be aware of. First of all, you can not change ownership of your domain as you can with many, read most, other companies. The only way to do this, oddly enough, is to transfer the domain away from yahoo. And, you have to wait at least 60 days before you can do this (which is pretty much standard policy for all registrars). Secondly, your renewal fees will be higher than the initial rate. 9.95 is probably what it will be, but they can change this at any time. The part in there about having to close out the services to keep from being charged is for their webhosting and other services, not domain registration. They do not charge you a fee to transfer your domain away (although, naturally, you will have to pay the company that you transfer it to their transfer fee).

I have a couple of hundred domains with yahoo and have personally been quite pleased with their customer service. It can take up to a day for them to get back with you, but they have been relatively quick to resolve the problems I've had. I too have seen a few temporary 1.00 charges, although none in the last couple of months, but they only last a few days and go away. These are just authorizations to make sure that your card is good.

One more note: I have never been able to use the "save my details" function even once. I have to re-enter my credit card on every domain purchase. This isn't too big a deal, but it does get kind of monotonous when you are registering 30 or 40 domains. Whenever I try to use the save details function, it quits letting me register domains until I log out, clear my cookies and reboot the computer....

Anyway, in short, Yahoo is a good company to register domains if you are going to use them yourself, but rather poor for people who want to resell them quickly and easily. It should also not be your choice if you want private nameservers (ie ns1.desiredname.com, etc.). And, again, I can't say much about their hosting, as I haven't and am not likely to ever use it.

Best wishes.

Patrick

Last week I registered a domain at yahoo for 2 years :
2.99x2=5.98 $/2yrs
After checking my cc , I notice that yahoo charged me 3 extra dollars for my purchase ! and after loging to my account to see my billing history and invoices , yahoo stated that my total for that purchase was : 5.97 not 5.98 , okay it doesn't matter(0.01$) But why don't they state their extra charges  ! I really think that their 2.99/yr offer is a suspicious deal !
So beware of yahoo hidden fees ! :S
By the way , does anyone know what is the customer support e-mail at yahoo , I found this someplace : domains-support@yahoo-inc.com .
Anyone contacted yahoo through this e-mail ? did u ever get a response ???

fastweb_12, I guarrantee you 100% that Yahoo did NOT charged your account for these 3 additional dollars. When you'll see your printed statement for October form the bank, I think there will be no additional charges from them. These charges actually are only 'authorisations'. That sure sounds like a pre-auth to me as well. Pre-Auth's can take up to 14 days to be removed depending on your credit-card issuer. Usually a credit-card from a big provider (ie. Citibank, Providian, ect...) will see the reversal sooner than a debit card from your local bank.

**At least 14 days is the longest amount of time that I have seen listed in the card issuers terms of service.

To those that have registered a domain through yahoo, I have a few questions.

1. How fast was the domain registered?
2. How is their control panel?
3. What limitations have you found?

I checked their site and it seems that they have extended the promotion. I have a few domains I wouldn't mind picking up if I could get them that cheap. I don't want to experience another company like 1&1 where 4 days after I paid to register a domain, it still wasn't registered. In that experience I ended registering at namecheap, and had 1&1 refund my money.

Bashar
11-06-2005, 08:43 PM

control panel is fine for managing DNS and pointing it elsewhere
limitation? never tried it just tried it twice, but people said there is no limitation

My domains are usually unavailable anywhere else within 3-5 minutes (or less) and are available for me to make changes to in anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. Average time to be able to change dns is around 20-45 minutes. The control panel is good.

Limitations: No bulk changes (ie you have to make changes to each domain one at a time), no nameservers can be created (you can change dns, just can't create nameservers on your domain) and you can't do any kind of push or domain ownership change at all through their system (you have to transfer away AFTER 60 days to sell the domain to someone else).

I too have had a very very bad experience with 1and1... like registering several domains that had never been registered before... only to find that they were suddenly registered by someone else a few minutes after I made my order.... but before my order went through??? Whatever. Also, the rest of the domains that I attempted to register with 1and1 didn't go through at all... They also charged me for several domains that never got registered MULTIPLE times. It took me weeks to get everything straightened out with them. Yahoo isn't bad and they are easy to work with. I have registered at least 1 or 2 domains with them every day since this promotion started and my experiences so far have been great (I also registered domains at the 4.98 and 1.99 rates before).

Best wishes to all.

If the whois is right, then you are okay and there is probably just some sort of simple mixup. What you need to do is contact them and keep checking in your control panel. I have hundreds of domains with yahoo and have never had this problem (and I don't and have never hosted with them).
