I will be switching my website from shared hosting at glob@t to a colocated server at colo4dallas. Currently I have my domain registered through godaddy. I'm a little unclear on how to point my domain to the new server at colo4dallas. I have the impression that I am using the nameservers that glob@t uses. Do I have to set up BIND on my new colocated server and configure godaddy to use it? Or do I have to use some sort of "more official" nameserver?

both ways work, setting up bind on ur new box and pointing the domain to it, or using the correct dns servers to point it to the new IP address in the new hosting company.

You will probably need to register nameservers at godaddy and bind it to the ip address of your dedicated server

So if I've got this straight, using my new server as it's own nameserver I would.....
--set up BIND on my server
--then configure godaddy to point "mydomain.net" to ns1(ns2).mydomain.net which is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx-the IP(s) that colo4dallas gives me

Makes sense, right? And I would rather have my server as the nameserver as I am familiar with BIND (on a home network) and feel comforatable setting it up properly. However, it brings up the issue of the reliability of my colocated server doing DNS. Is it more reliable to have a 3rd party nameserver doing the work?

BTW, if I were to use godaddy's nameservers, what do you think the charge would be? I don't seem to see where on their website you would order that kind of thing.

Maybe I can use colo4dallas nameservers? Hell I don't know, heh.

godaddy provides free DNS hosting with every domain dont they?

I have scoured their site and I can't find free nameserver services anywhere. What they do allow is for your to use their nameservers for their hosting plans. They also allow you to use a nameserver that points to a pre-made "parked" style page. I will not be using godaddy for my hosting, obviously.

I got the hint that colo4dallas could do my nameserving when I was signing up, I will have to contact them to see if I am correct.

I know how to change the nameservers. What I don't know how to do is use godaddy's nameservers for my new colocation. Two different things, sorry if I am confusing people. I'm pretty sure I'm going to set up BIND on my server anyway.
