So what do you think? How many customers can you pack on a server without causing problems? I know that reading from some threads that this seems to be a common downfall for companies.
Ideas? I guess that since I'm doing hosting by the gig (of HD space), I'd do the following:
40GB HD = ~35 gigs
60GB HD = ~50 gigs

Hello
This question is impossible to answer as it will depend on what the accounts are being used for.
We have servers with no cgi 10MB packages on them, 2000 sites per server with no problems.
A normal mix of large medium and small sites would be 300 max per server. The big plans we do are 100 per server.
This is something you can only learn by experience.

GordonH is right. There is too many variables involved to give an accurate response.
One of the important things you need to look at is what services you are running and what kind of load they put on the server.

Also depends alot on the hardware.... obviously a dual 1.2ghz with scsi discs and 4 gigs of ram can handle a LOT more sites, even high traffic ones, than a 900mhz machine with 512 ram.

On volume I've seen anywhere from 100 to 1000. It depends on the disk space and usage. You are not going to want to put 1000 sites on a box if each site is 19.99. If your selling $1 web sites you'll want to pack them in.
Really it boils down to resources. Disk, CPU, Mem and your revenue model.

Gordan said it all. You have to monitor the resources on the server and decide where to cut it off. We have several server for different accounts, one for low end packages and one for high end packages. The amount of customers on each type of server will be different. Look at the plans you're offering and ask yourself if everyone used every resource at what peak will this server performance start degrading. That's where you want to cut off the amount of sites being hosted on the server. Everyone here is correct, it's not a cut and dry answer. It depends!!! We all hate that word but it's true.

300-500 web site max. depends upon server load and how active are web sites.
100mb x 300 = 30g of space.
i have a customer having 200 gb log file ;)
it all depends upon kind of accounts.
