Can anyone suggest who they have found to be the best free provider of web stats. My host is having problems providing web log stats and I am looking for another source.

I have looked at two which seem ok Hitbox.com and goldstats.com. Would welcome some input
on these or others.

I was thinking of doing this but it means a lot of changes need to be made: set up the script, place code on every page, rename pages to shmtl and links.

Not really...

Of course depending on how many pages you'd have to edit but using for example Editpad you could put the SSI call to LOTS of pages simultaneously. A couple of hundred pages goes very fast.

Also you could use .htaccess so that you do not need to rename your files. (so that ssi works on html pages too). I do not remember exactly how it's done so I'm not going to try to show it now.

Also there should not be any problems setting the script up. It's like wash and go altough I've heard that some people have had probs...maybe a server thing then.

The real problem is that how do you work with the logfile as it gets too big very quickly? It really doesn't work on busy sites...or am I wrong?

Site Meter offers a free stats service. I use them on a couple of my sites. I particularly like them cause they offer a transparent gif to track so it's not obvious it's there.
