Is there any way to keep your IP address when you switch web hosts? Perhaps this can be done by bouncing the old IP address to the new one.

Although it isn't much, your host pays for the use of the IP address and I doubt they'd let you use it after you left. Short answer = No.

No, the implications are too big, sometimes the IP's are purchased by the upstrem carrier, etc etc

NO :D

Even if they were to let you have the IP you still wouldnt be able to use it, you would have to take a entire class c

Question:
I would like to change providers. Can I take the addresses currently used to the new provider?

Answer:
There are two types of addresses: Provider Aggregatable (PA) and Provider Independent (PI). If you have PA addresses and change to a new provider you are required to return the addresses to your previous provider.

Contrary to PA address space however, PI address space remains assigned to its user as long as the criteria for the original assignment are met independently of the use of a particular provider's services.

For further information on PA and PI address space please refer to the documents "Provider Independent vs Provider Aggregatable Address Space" (ripe-127) and "European Internet Registry Policies and Procedures" (ripe-185) section 2.4 Provider Independent vs Provider Aggregatable Addresses at:

I'm moving from one server to another in the same NOC. In this case it's possible. (jumping for joy http://www.webhostingtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif)

P.S.astra4: The Terms and conditions of RIPE and ARIN might not be the same. (I'm sure of this)

Trijnie that doesnt mean they will let you move the ip, it isnt as easy as saying ok that ip now goes to this server. if your on a shared server the ips are bound to the servers ip in blocks, you cant take your ip out of the block and move it it isnt possible.

I have to be honest. I realy (realy) don't know much about servers, but they are moving my client's from one to another. With that I mean the IP's specifically.

They are prob. redirecting it and not actually moving it, its pretty much impossible to move just a few IP's as you would have to reassign the whole class c the IP's are in. It is possible to redirect the IP's to another IP but its considered sloppy routing.

While not a direct answer to the original question, aI do have a tidbit that is related. Before I got my dedicated server last year (with Dialtone Internet), I asked if I could keep the IP addresses assigned to me when I moved to a colocated server with them. I was assured I could, which means the move will be totally transparent to all visitors. Aside from the server possibly being down for a short while during the changeover, there will be no disruption.

I know it's not the same as moving from a shared server, or moving to another host. I just though some people might like to know.
