View Full Version : Why is enom so expensive?
easternBrain 10-07-2005, 10:09 AM Well I have a domain registered at enom cos I think it's the best regirstrar. But I've met so many people who tell me that I can have my domain transferred to a registrar like GoDaddy.com and save a lot of money. I had read some negative feedback about GoDaddy so im not sure about them.
why eNom charges $29.95 a year for a .com domain while GoDaddy offer it for as low as $6.95 if registered for 5 years or more.
Divaqs 10-07-2005, 10:50 AM Hi easternBrain,
GoDaddy and eNom are built on different business models. GoDaddy is designed more for the retail market and eNom is designed more for the reseller market.
GoDaddy has a reputation for competing against its own resellers, while eNom is careful to not compete in price, name, or functionality.
So, in other words, you can find much cheaper prices from eNom if you either purchase your domain(s) from an eNom reseller (i.e. registerfly, namecheap) or get your own reseller account. The determining factor being how many domains you are expecting to buy....
easternBrain 10-07-2005, 11:37 AM thanks Divaqs, that helps :)
Bashar 10-07-2005, 01:13 PM exactly, couldn't agree more with Divaqs
yet there is other providers like netsol and register.com charge high and their market is end users :D
it all depends on the business model.

Which is probably why both of those registrars continue to lose market share, while GoDaddy and eNom are dramatically increasing market share. :)

What is "a lot of money"? $2? $5?
You can get a free reseller account from eNom that will give you pricing of $8.95. Send them a cheque for $8.95 and you'll have an $8.95 balance.. enough to register one domain.
Bingo.. you're done. It will cost you maybe $3 more then godaddy, and you'll keep your domain in the registrar that you already know is better.
Let us know what you decide!

I am pretty positive netsol's profits eclipse enom and godaddy's combined. Who cares about market share if you are making large profits

Depends, if i had say 50% of the market share, and was loosing say 1% of that share each month, i think i would start to care... gives me 50 months before im out of business, whats that 4 years?
anyway that aside, i agree, enom are cheaper for resellers, godaddy is cheaper for the everyday user.
solidar 10-08-2005, 04:18 PM For reseller directi is best. As low as $6.49 and support is quick
domainscabin 10-09-2005, 08:28 AM enom is more for large purchases, godaddy for smaller purchases, as a reseller account at enom can get relatively cheap.

If they lose 1% in a year and still make large profits they have a good model that will work
Gerrit 10-11-2005, 04:42 PM So basically everyone can start selling domains if they want because eNom gives you a free reseller account regardless of how professional the reseller-accountholder is?
I'd say: don't go too cheap. I have reached the stage where I pay 30 USD with pleasure if I have good support, reliable and trustworthy registrar, good security, good DNS features. Saving 20 USD a year is not worth the worries and headaches some cheaper registrars have as side-effects ;)

This is correct. Anyone can sign up for an eNom reseller account and start reselling domain names to their customers. It is definately good advice to pick your "parent" reseller very carefully, because they do have the ability to change your pricing if they want. (And even if you try and "protect" yourself using a few different methods, they can simply send a request to enom and have your reseller sub-account modified manually.)

Excellent advice! It is good to see someone who is willing to spend a few extra $$ for higher quality service/support.
Sadly, most people simply try to find the cheapest provider.. and then they wonder why support is aweful or their provider charges $$ for many features found elsewhere for free...
dmaven 10-11-2005, 09:45 PM If you are paying a few pennies over their cost they have no incentive to provide any levels of support. I would rather pay a little extra and get quality systems and support

I should probably point out that the "free" reseller accounts are ones offered by resellers, so in other words they are sub-reseller accounts. Your parent reseller is the one that is technically supposed to provide you support
You can get a reseller account directly from eNom, which is called an ETP account. To do so requires you prefill your account at minimum amounts to obtain different pricing models (http://www.enom.com/resellers/default.asp), so to get the $6.95 pricing you need to prefill your account $6950.00. If I remember correctly, and things haven't changed, there is also an agreement/contract that must be signed and various forms of identification provided that confirm your identity.
So... it does take some work to be a direct reseller of eNom... and such accounts aren't trivial. :)
