Hi,

I have to make a decision soon on what switch i'm gone buy. Now i'm very suprised by the differences in prices.
3com and cisco are obvious nice switches, but they are also very expensive.
Then there is also allied telesyn(http://www.alliedtelesyn.com) , which is a lot cheaper(managed or unmanaged)

Is there also a noticeble difference between them. My choose would goto a 19'' managed switch with 16 or 24 ports. Allied is a lot cheaper(about $500 compared to $1000+) but what is the difference.

Thanks

never go with allied, we had a switch from them and and the snmp always froze on it , telnet froze...but traffic kept flowing (sometimes)

we will be switching to the HP 2524 very soon

You can't go wrong with the HP 2524 and they are about $850.00

We have an older HP 2400M and have been very happy with it. We also have a couple of Baystack 350 switches that are very nice.

If you don't need layer-3 (routing) then there are several good cheap switches. HP, 3Com, DLink, Linksys.

Stay away from Allied and Netgear and you should be fine.

I have a D-Link DES1218 which has 16 ports and an optional 2 port Gigabit module for £287 which is $414.94 . It doesnt offer SNMP but is manageable via the console port, for port trunking, VLAN's and more.

The DES1226 has 24ports and is around 2x the price of the one above.

Regarding the Netgear switches, Ive never had problems with them. I havent used any of there managed switches yet, I've used the FS105 and FS108 which are small SOHO switches.
