I was impressed by what rackspace.com was offering. Anyone had any experience with, or heard anything about these guys?

they are recommended by a lot of people. i suggest you try a search on this forum as well as sitepoint. you will find everything you need to know about rackspace. as an alternative, you might want to check out digitalnation as well. personally, i have my dedicated server from 4webspace. below are the urls to guide you:

i was with rackspace.com for a dedicated linux server from May 30, 2000 to Dec 31, 2000 and was very happy with the level of service and support. Very professional.. But ultimately hardware upgrade monthly costs and growing bandwidth costs forced me to move.

Problem was my vbulletin forum with 1,500 new posts/day was killing my server even after upgrading the memory 3 times to 384MB ! I had either move to a higher end server with rackspace for around US$800 - 1000/month or get a slightly better server for 1/2 that price elsewhere.

For my vbulletin forum, I ended up choosing a Linux server at Ultraspeedusa.com which is the same host that hosts webhostingtalk.com :) that and i got myself a raq3 dedicated server from 4webspace.com as well for my other indevelopment sites

If you're not running anything too intensive that requires you to upgrade constantly, RackSpace is an excellent choice. SitePoint (http://sitepoint.com) and its forums are hosted on a RackSpace server and the uptime/speed has been absolutely phenomenal. Support around the clock has been consistently reliable. Highly recommended.

They are simply too expensive IMHO

We have used rackspace in the past, and I they are nothing less than superb at what they do, the network is fast, and the support staff are knowledgable and available 24/7.

The only downside is the price, but in terms of reliablity rackspace come up trumps.

I have a site hosted on Rackspace, and I agree in terms of network uptime and support, it's simply phenomenal. However, I share the same concerns about Rackspace in terms of cost. Time for a new thread on dedicated hosts just as good as Rackspace, but cheaper :)

Rackspace.... Waayyyyyy tooooo expensive...

Even if the sleep next to my server, too expensive.

RackSpace offers "managed" servers; taking that into consideration, their prices are actually pretty reasonable compaired with other hosting companies' managed server packages. But does the average dedicated-server user need a managed server?
