View Full Version : 4webspace questions
Hi,
1) those who already got their servers at 4 webspace, could you share your experience for the first days/weeks? I mean performance and uptime. Probably post a URL, preferably with a heavy site with a lot of elements on it so that I can see the speed. Iīm monitoring 4webspace.com but Iīd prefer a page with more stuff on it so that I can see if it "hangs" sometimes.
Iīm ready to order a RAQ3 and you might say what are you waiting for, but actually a decent speed is important for me, even at this sensational price.
And Iīm still curious if they could stand that offer for a while. Iīll not use the 100 GB like most people, but then again, I could, I just need to post a gallery to the Hun and thatīll be 30 GB alone. Then again, the $ 3 over Gig is fair. But if I use 80 GB per month for 6 months in a row, will that get me into trouble, I mean I just pay $ 99 for it right?
2) A last question: I have 750 domains, can I host them all on a RAQ3, e.g. when I do most of them virtual? Or will I have to go for a RAQ4. That one hasnīt that 200 accounts limitation right? And the 200 acounts limit for the RAQ3 is that just a recommendation from cobalt or is that a hard limit that I canīt overcome even when I can work with apache and linux? And if itīs possible to host more domains, is it damn hard to realize? I donīt need ftp and email for all. Folder redirection would be o.k. too. The IP limit (is there any - 200 ?) is o.k. too. I just would like to setup more domains, each one with itīs own content.
Your experience is very appreciated :)
The price is superb of course, Iīm just picky because Iīm moving hosts all the time (because there come problems with speed and reliability afterwards) and thatīll kill me some day. I was reading only good stuff about tera-byte for almost a year now, otherwise I wouldnīt even suggest to host at 4 webspace, no matter if itīs 99 or $ 49.
I just hope that the mixed calculation with the bandwidth price works for 4webspace (at least for 1 year or more) so that I donīt need to aaaarrrrgghhhh change host again.
typus 01-06-2001, 09:09 PM I first had my site hosted on their free server (Spaceports) after a few months, I signed up for a shared server, a few months later I signed up for the 4webspace RaQ, here's my experience with the RaQ:
I signed up at night and got my server ready to go the next morning. I then fooled around with it a bit, and asked for a RAM upgrade (at night, and it was done the next morning again). I had trouble receiving my emails, got it solved after talking with the staff on IRC.
So far my site is running smoothly on the server. If you want to monitor my site, go ahead. It's at http://www.noated.com. This site uses MySQL/PHP heavily.
They say that the limit is 100GB/month so as long as if you don't go over that, you should be fine.
The RaQ3 has a limit of 250 domains, I'm not really sure what will happen if you go over that, since I only have 4 domains.
Guess that's all that I can tell you. BTW: no down time on the RaQ for me, yet.
Thanks for the info, Typus. I like the speed of your site. Actually I signed up a few minutes ago. Someone know something about the 250 domain limit whether it is some sort of hard coded limit of cobalt or just a recommendation? I want to park a lot more domains, redirect to folders would be o.k., donīt need ftp or email for most of them.
syanet 01-06-2001, 10:38 PM I believe it is a limit on the machine. If your just pointing domains it should be fine to park up to 250. However, a RaQ will start to choke up between 110-130 moderately used sites so don't count on developing anymore than that.

hey typus.. so you're the fellow Anime Luna partner site sharing the spotlight with my site on About.com :)
out of curiousity typus, how much ram did you upgrade to ?
typus 01-07-2001, 12:43 AM Hey partner :)
I upgraded to 128mb. And that's barely enough to run noated.com (RAM usage is around 110-112 meg right now).

on a linux server, your ram will almost always be used up. linux always uses it all up and then sets it as reserve, sort of. when your system needs the ram, it takes it from the reserve and uses it. so you will never see less than 80-90% usage of ram.
So, how do you know if it is out of RAM then ?

Run 'top' and see how much swap is in use. If your system is using a lot of swap, you need more RAM.
partition 01-07-2001, 08:01 AM A question
Can i host more than 1 domain on the same IP adress on here servers?
Thanks
Chicken 01-07-2001, 10:55 AM Yes, you can host more than one domain.
webfors 01-07-2001, 11:15 AM Hi Typus,
250 IS the limit of the RAQ. You will not be able to put more accounts than that. That's the reason I decided against it, since the majority of my sites are extremely low traffic and use very little resources. I could easily put 500 accounts on one server (using P3 650, 512 megs of ram).
battuss 01-07-2001, 12:34 PM Aha good that i read this i was about to signup but i had some more questions.
I run a nonnude kinda adult site.
I get 2k traffic a day and growing.
I get new members everyday that download vids and pictures.
I want the RAQ3 server it comes with 32MB.
How much RAM do i need, will 128MB enough.
What happens if its not enough, will the site go down.
How do i know how much i use?
I never had any experience with ded. hosting.
I have a normal HTML site without PHP and stuff. Is it easy to setup.
Thanks
Battuss
-Edward- 01-07-2001, 12:47 PM 128mb should be enough ..... It will make ur website go at a crawl during busy periods not having enough ram. If your unsure just go straight for the 256mb ram.
battuss 01-07-2001, 12:55 PM Thanks,
Im now at a virtual host.
Is a ded. host always faster?
Even with "only" 128 MB
The thing is my server is down pretty often but on the other site i only pay 20 bucks a month and they dont bitch about the bandwidth.
Will it be a good step forward getting a ded. hotst ?

How 'top' run?
Chicken 01-07-2001, 01:42 PM Telnet in (log in of course), and type:

-Edward- 01-07-2001, 03:19 PM LMAO. Nope i didnt mean them.
Got mine up a hour ago (ordered yesterday) :)
Well looks like I canīt switch everything over because of the 250 site limit. SO Iīll use it additionally and order less bandwidth at the other server.
It pushes pics with 6-9 KByte/sec. (I have DSL and COULD take more) to me over here in europe. If it stays like that it would work quite good for hosting galleries.
Now I got my additional 64 IPīs too. Theyīre pretty responsive. Wake up and got 3 new mails from them. Next weīll try to setup a DNS control panel for me where I can setup domains at will. Speed is very satisfying so far. Itīs below Alabanza and Exodus Iīd say but still pretty good. And very stable, not fast one second and slow the next.
jabweb 01-09-2001, 10:20 PM I don't know about the RaQ3 but the RaQ4 has no limits on the number of name based web sites, only a limit of 250 IP based web sites.
Yeah someone else was saying that too. That is good news. It was the only drawback I saw so far but 250 IPīs is just fine as long as I can park more domains than 250. Havenīt been able to install such a lot yet, but looks like it would be possible.
Matt2000 01-13-2001, 04:36 PM You seem to be in pretty good shape there, you've only got 6 megs of swap in use there.
On a related note, if you can host several domains on one IP address, than what are the advantages to paying for those extra IPs? We'll need to host about 5 of them on the RAQ so I want to make sure they are all ok.
Thanks.
Matt
syanet 01-13-2001, 07:52 PM You can only set one badwidth limit per IP, only one anonamoyus FTP per IP. Things like that is why you'd want extra. Also if you plan on running your own nameservers you need at least 2 IPs.
And the wildcard for subdomains is per IP (at least at tera-byteīs DNS)
And for search engines it might be better when you link your sites alltogether (to increase your own "link popularity") they wonīt see that easy that the sites are all from the same person. And sometimes search engines ban whole IPīs. In this case all domains on a single would be affected although most of them "didnīt do anything".
