before i setup my own webhosting, i have a free 1and1 share webhosting account and i registered 5 domains with them and one of them i use for my webhosting biz. i created the name servers or i tho that i did but it turn out it wasn't real name servers but A record that point to their name servers. to my supprise it work but keep in mind ns1 and ns2.mydomain.com are not real NS but A record.

i want to transfer my domains out of 1and1 and cancel my hosting service with them (1and1 really suck) how do i transfer it to let's say namecheap and not casuing any downtime to my customers.

is it even possible? i'm using Windows2003/IIS6 with Helm and my server is at theplanet. the ns1 and ns2.mydomain.com look like this when i do a dnsstuff ns lookup

mydomain.com NS IN 172800 ns27.1and1.com.

mydomain.com NS IN 172800 ns28.1and1.com.

ns27.1and1.com. A IN 172800 217.160.224.3

ns28.1and1.com. A IN 172800 217.160.228.3

If you mean you want your domains' website active while they're
being transferred to another registrar, here's what you can do:

1. Change hosting before starting the registrar transfers. A catch
here is if 1and1's terms say they'll cancel the hosting the minute
they get a transfer request, check with them to be sure.

2. Assuming 1and1 will keep your current hosting with them active
while the transfers are taking effect, again make sure the DNS
change is done before the transfers are started. Absolutely no
changes can be made to a domain name while a registrar transfer
is ongoing until it's concluded successfully or not.

3. Assuming your website with your new hosting company is now
active and you've already changed your domains' DNS, go ahead
and start the registrar transfers. Make sure admin email is good,
domains are unlocked, and they're still paid at least a month or so
before their respective expiration dates.

4. Once the transfers are successful, cancel your 1and1 hosting.

What I wrote above is ideal. In reality, anything goes.

No.

i got a domain that i registered with 1and1 and i created two name servers ns1 and ns2.mydomain.com that is use for my webhosting service. the problem is what i tho i created nameserver record isn't NS record at all. it was A record. as you can see from my dnsstuff report.

now i want to transfer my domain out of 1and1 'cause their crap service and domain control panel didn't really do what i want for example my name servers problem

how do i transfer my domain out and still have my name servers intact when ns1 and ns2.mydomain.com that i created was NS record at all.

am i clear?

A "name server" is nothing but a sub domain with an A record that at the same time has a glue record. The latter one can be checked at http://registrar.verisign-grs.com/cgi-bin/whois by checking the "name server" box. If your sub domain appears there, it is a registered name server. For example, 1&1 creates these glue records if you use your sub domains as a name server for one of the domains you registered with them (and for that, they require that you explicitly assigned A records to your sub domains).

About your name server records, you'd have to talk to your future registrar. A "glue record" can only be created by a domain's registrar. Basically, such a record causes the GTLD name servers (for .com, .net, .org only of course ...) to "know" about your sub domains' A record(s). Such a record can only be created by the domain's current registrar.
