View Full Version : Where do you guys learn all this?
phpcoder 04-13-2002, 10:35 PM Hey, I am only 14 years old... but please don't think that I am just like a little child. I know php and mysql.
Anyways, I really look-up to you guys... I wanta be a big corporate guy of a big data center company or something... Or maybe just have my own big webhosting company.
Anyways, if you don't mind me asking, I wanted to know where you guys learned about all of this stuff with servers and OC3 lines and stuff like that. Like how to be a data center technician (if there are any here).
I know basic stuff already, like root access and upgrading php and stuff like this, but not much about other stuff
Any response would be greatly apprciated...
Thanks,
Alec
web docta 04-13-2002, 10:39 PM I think that you 14 year olds know more stuff than us older guys :D

hey, I'm still a teen, and last year I just got into computers... All I did was read a lot of books, and read a lot of sites. WHT is full of information, just try and look through old posts when you have spare time. In no time you'll be a true nerd
creid 04-13-2002, 10:53 PM Hey!
First thing I would tell you to do is throw yourself in the pit of web hosting and volunteer, volunteer and VOLUNTEER!You will gain a lot of experience from that and WHT. Keep those two things in your diet and you should be loosing weight in No time!:D
Seriously though....thats how I started and now Im doing "ok"
in this industry.
Anyways Good Luck!
Chris
P.S I am the same age as you, if ya got any more questions email me!My email is in my sig.
phpcoder 04-13-2002, 10:59 PM lol, well... I wanta start learning early so that by the time im like 20-30-40-50 I know EVERYTHING ;) :P
phpcoder 04-13-2002, 11:00 PM Awesome, any idea where I could post or find a place to help out? I can do support, or whatnot, I know anout alot of errors that people get and stuff. Ill volunteer for free, so if anybody knows of a person or place, pm me :D
punkboy_jerm 04-13-2002, 11:12 PM well im only 16 and im still trying to learn
i know html and cgi but nothing when i comes to perl and such!
i run a few websites and im venturing now into webdesign and flash.

I know html... I tried perl... well that went through one ear and out another. PHP is more my type :D
punkboy_jerm 04-13-2002, 11:18 PM ya PHP is also something id like to read up on
DanielP 04-13-2002, 11:35 PM creid is correct about the volunteering, i did that 8 years ago when i was 12, it lasted for about 3 years before i got a paid job, but what i learned in those years i could not put a price tag on, but it takes a lot of hard work and a good bit of disapointment :)
Espically when you accidentally delete a server's dns zones and have to rebuild 300 of them by hand in 3 hours..... whew... now that wasn't fun..... hehe
*shudders*
;)
Anyhow, best of luck.

hehe, whoa - deja vu! a good friend of mine go into perl easily and I thought I could get into it easily as well - but its totally different then what I had learned from c++ class - its similar but it also has alot of different stuff that I didn't even care to take in.
PHP on the other hand was just c++ with some added web functions ;)
lol, anyways, I still need a good source for learning about administrating a linux machine - I would volunteer but I doubt I can find anyone/company that would take me under their wing :o
g'luck ;)
DanielP 04-13-2002, 11:46 PM Heh.... I've already tutored 2 many in my time....... ;)
Maybe again one day but I've already helped many.... but who knows, I assume if my next company takes off I might go tutor someone else ;)
phpcoder 04-13-2002, 11:46 PM Thanks everybody... Im gonna start to look for a small company or any company that will let me sorta tag* around with them for a week or so... learn so stuff and then do free work for them for a few years... lol :D
Rewdog 04-13-2002, 11:49 PM I bet if you post in the Job offers and Request forum you would get a good response. Who doesn't want guys who work for free :).

I think most companies wouldn't like taking the risk of taking in someone who doesn't know much about how things work; obviously, in fear of accidents that might screw up their services or whatnot :(
phpcoder 04-13-2002, 11:56 PM I see where you are coming from, but don't you think that if somebody like me says like, if you teach me this stuff for a while I will do x,x, and x?
I wouldn't let anybody that said: Let me do this stuff for free, as you don't know much about them.
alpha 04-13-2002, 11:58 PM true. but the idea is that sometimes, you don't know what x, x, and x are...
but I guess if you use the concept of "ask before doing" - then you should be perfectly fine :D
phpcoder 04-14-2002, 12:00 AM Yah, I mean I wouldn't touch anything when it comes to a potentiall 50.00-10,000 loss for the company. I would just let somebody else do it. If I screwed something like that up... well... phwee... I'd just kill myself (after I fixed it...lol).

aww... that'd be no good! what would happen to all the knowledge you gained! wasted! take your brain out first! :D
anyways, let me know how it goes ;) if multiple people contact you, send one my way hehe
phpcoder 04-14-2002, 12:16 AM Well I would ask first, then do... or ask what the solution would be... so I would learn.
DanielP 04-14-2002, 12:37 AM Your right, it is a big potential risk, most of the support staff @ VO while they had either a good knowledge of linux and no knowledge of cpanel, or extreme knowledge of cpanel and just a little knowledge of linux, they were trained, along with their own ambitions and craving for knowledge into a very good support team. I personally hired a 15 year old in the mix to get them more famillar with everything and expand their knowledge, mainly for the fact that I myself had been in his shoes before, and now he helps train some of the new techs on cpanel and general areas of how things work. So it is a risk, and mistakes will and do happen, you just have to be prepared for that, but you must allways follow the golden rule, "If you don't know, then ASK, all that matters is that you learn, not that you don't know."
I made all of my techs follow that rule and everything went pretty well, after all its easier to ask and spend 10mins of my time, than it is to search google, find the answer, implement it and watch the server blow up :D
phpcoder 04-14-2002, 12:44 AM DanielP and everybody else, thank you for all of the responses. I am really getting interested in this stuff now. When I first found this site, I debated whethere or not to sign-up, as I was afriad people would treat me like a little kid. I am glad now that I took the time to sign up, and have some small offers coming my way :D
And DanielP, thanks for the golden rule, and the part about google :D
DanielP 04-14-2002, 12:50 AM Be warned, once we suck you into our web of support and servers there's no looking back heh. :D
I've been on the net/aol since 1991, (age 8) and been running/working for sites, services, gaming networks, freewebhosts, internet radio shows, hosting companies and consulting companies since i was 12, back in 1995. Its an endless cycle of constant learning, adventure, arguments, fun and stress.
The internet is my life and my life is the internet. Aside from food and a little sleep its about all I need ;)
alpha 04-14-2002, 12:50 AM and there's also that frustration part for the 'tutors' - haha, i hate it when im getting help and after some kind of explanation, they ask "got it?" and I'm like: "Ummm, yea..." - I hate frustrating people that are trying to help me.
I've taught some people java, let me tell ya, if they have no programming experience whatsoever, it gets a bit frustrating because you have to keep telling them to put semicolons at the end of every line except for when you're doing if, while, function header, etc, etc... and they:
while (!tutor.fixCode()) {
tutee.visual(tutor);
tutee.visual(monitor);
}
:stickout
after a while, they just stare at you and say ok whenever you tell them something about coding :)
DanielP 04-14-2002, 12:52 AM Yeh, thats correct alpha, being a teacher can be stressful, god knows I've blown up a few times, but I also have one other rule, never ask me the same thing twice, its ok if you don't understand it to ask me to re-explain it, but if I explain something to you and you understand it, WRITE IT DOWN, the one thing that gets old and annoying quick is someone who constantly asks how to do something you've explained to them many times. So allways keep notes, even if their un-organized you never know when you might need them ;).
phpcoder 04-14-2002, 12:53 AM haha... well Ill support whatever I do when Im not sleeping, eating, school, or at hockey tournaments :D
alpha... like the php code :D... whens the while statement gonna stop lol ;) :P
Akash 04-14-2002, 12:54 AM . When I first found this site, I debated whethere or not to sign-up, as I was afriad people would treat me like a little kid.
I think we're mostly all just little kids (less than 24)....I'm still shocked at Daniel's age.....as the father of the McNugget once said..."Who wudda thunk it?"

when tutor.fixCode() method is true :)
as in when the tutor fixes whatever compiler error that is on the tutee's screen :D

I do that :D You should see my /php_crap folder lol. All txt files of stuff people have taught me, explained, or current project variables :D
DanielP 04-14-2002, 12:56 AM lol, hey now, i'm not that young anymore...... i'm almost 20...... hehe
*shudder*
ack.... where'd the years go.

I guess the attempted joke wasn't that funny lol. I was trying to say that that cycle will never stop... they will just keep asking ;)

All those stories have already been heard on web hosting radio... :)
Abu Mami 04-14-2002, 02:49 AM The nice thing about being young is that you've got plenty of time to learn all this stuff. Believe me, homework is a piece of cake. Just wait till you've got to work for a living, take care of a family, contribute to the community, and tend to personal hygiene.
When you're an old fart like myself, you'll really miss all those grey cells that you killed by drinking too much beer in college. Enjoy school, enjoy learning about the web, and enjoy your beer when you're in college (not while driving however!). When you've got a family, it'll all change.

nahhhhhhhhhhhhhh :D u only heard my hunting stories on WHR :)
richy 04-14-2002, 06:34 AM heh age is odd,im 20 and i feel now im learning faster then when i was 15 but i have one person aged 15 that i teach and another aged 16 and theyre picking up stuff faster then i ever had. age should never be a barrier to knowledge. never be afraid to ask. always ALWAYS take backups and treble check. the cyrix 200 under your desk is for making mistakes and just trying stuff out on to see what it would do :) best wishes and good luck on finding someone. your motivation will prove a valuable asset.

Thanks for all of the help people.
BrianF 04-14-2002, 05:57 PM Ventures Online:
Just out of curiosity, how did you remember what those 300 dns zones were in order to rebuild them? I can't imagine a job like that!
--Brian
DanielP 04-14-2002, 07:01 PM Well, that was back before I was running ventures, several years back, for the most part they were IPless domains with very few customizations, i used what customer records i had and support queries for stuff like bigmailbox or custom entires, it wasn't an easy task but i only made a few minor errors. :)
