Hello.

Let's say I buy a SHARED hosting package from a provider, and of course I should use their nameservers for my domain to work.

My question is:

If I have the IP address of the server I'm hosted on -for exapmpe: ns1.hostingco.com with IP address 192.168.000.000, and ns2...

Can I register my domain as a nameserver and assign the IP addresses of the main company? ns1.mydomain.com with the IP address of ns1.hostingco.com?

Will that work? Will this affect any of the features offered by the hosting company? Or does the hosting company has to configure something on the server to deal with this particular situation?

Please advise.

This will work. Nothing required to be done in H-Sphere Hosting.

Thanks. Will that work on a UNIX server?

It should work as long as you use the same IPs, but you will get a name mismatch on dnsreport.

It may work in theory, but it's a VERY GOOD practice to have A records at the DNS server's end for both of the nameservers. See if your host will let you edit the DNS zone or tell them to change the "ns1.theirdomain.com" to :ns1.yourdomain.com". They will also need to do this for ns2 respectively. Once they change that, they should add A records for both your NS1/NS2. This will allow everything to function correctly.

If you can edit your dns zone, add A records with their nameserver ip's for your own nameservers.

Dear sirs,

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Nearly all hosting companies allow free additional domain name parking at the main account (I think this is done automatically). Does that solve the issue or creating the A records at the DNS server's end?

Let's say I park a new domain name at the main account and then set the new domain name as a nameserver at my registrar and give ns1 and ns2 the IP addresses of the server?

Will that work?

You cannot assign IPs when you add a parked/add-on domain.

A solution to this is.. point your own domains name servers to some free dns hosting site like zoneedit.com

And then add a records there..

Yes. I understand that.

My question was: I have a domain already registered (eg. whatever2.com). My main hosting account is (eg. whatever1.com).

I park whatever2.com at my main hosting account (whatever1.com). Then I register whatever2.com at my registrar as a nameserver and give it the IPs of the server on which I'm hosted.

Will that work? :)

Thanks.
