View Full Version : About the 250 sites limit
astralexis 01-06-2001, 07:53 AM I read somewhere the Cobalt RaQ servers can host a maximum of 250 sites.
What kind of limit is this? Is it a "hard coded" limit in cobalt administration software? Can one turn this off to allow more sites? Or is it just a "recommended maximum" type limit?
Chicken 01-06-2001, 10:32 AM I remember this exact question asked to the mailing list. Those archives contain everything you ever wanted to know about the RaQ and more. :)
Since I don't know for sure, try looking there until someone that does know replies.
i'm not sure of the answer but why would you put more than 200 light to moderate use sites on a raq? for me, after i hit about 180-200 (maybe less), i would get a new raq.
Chicken 01-06-2001, 12:03 PM Possibly for domain parking reasons. But this could be acomplished through DNS if that's the case.
yeah..if i was just parking, i wouldnt mind that many sites. but if the sites were active, its a different story.
-Edward- 01-06-2001, 02:29 PM I decided i'm not gonna put more than 60 active sites on my server. Once its at that limit buy a second one :).
Domenico 01-07-2001, 07:58 AM The cobalt raq3 can handle more than that so why buy another one then allready?
Ok, if those sites get 10000 hits a day each you better buy another one fast but otherwise relax and save your money for something more powerfull I guess...
astralexis 01-07-2001, 08:06 AM Hey Domenico, you seem to know something about RaQ. Do you know the answer to the first posting?

You did search the Cobalt mailing list archives right?
astralexis 01-07-2001, 11:32 AM Ah that's the cobalt mailing list you were talking about... so that would be this "KnowledgeBase" thingy on the cobalt.com support site, right? I now had a look but didn't find a plain answer.
Anyways, I'm not in a hurry since I don't own a server, I just asked by curiosity.
Chicken 01-07-2001, 11:37 AM Actually no, it isn't the KB (which is limited). The mailing list will provide you with hours of entertainment.

Searchable here:

One thread about the site limit:

Imagine sending anyone to that place to find anything out! :smash:
I don't think there is a hard coded limit beyond Apache's capacity to handle virtual sites, so I was told.
I would have thought that keeping an eye on the usage of resources frequently as a part of admin procedures would help. That's how I'm balancing server against dollar.
You're right though Chicken, there's a wealth of *fabulous* information out there for RaQ owners. Their's is certainly one of the marketing coup's of the IT age.
Cheers.
Chicken 01-08-2001, 01:52 AM LOL, yes it is quite a wealth of errrrr... something, heh.
I posted that URL due to the following statement (and I quote):
"It's like a toaster. It's designed to toast four slices bread. Should someone redesign it to toast six slices of bread? Not if the whole purpose of the toaster is to toast four slices of bread <smile>."
In other words, 250 sites. Is it like a toaster?
haha haaaa ha haa haha :D :D :D
"....In other words, 250 sites. Is it like a toaster?"
Well, it looks like a toaster, it burns bread($) like a toaster, you shouldn't pour water on it when it's switched on (like a toaster)....conclusion?
It's a toaster!
Now I understand...
jabweb 01-10-2001, 08:10 PM I know that the RaQ 4 has a hard limit of 250 IP based sites but no hard limit on name based sites. See pg. 36 of the RaQ 4 manual for details.
