Well, for one there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space. It will cost them billion of dollars to do that, and even more.

Some hosting companies use the term 'unlimited' to gain potential customer's attention, and a lot of good hosts who want to be honest with the customers are the victims.

Many times, this type of host are the ones who are not reliable, because they will not be able to stand behind their promise in the long run. :)

There is nothing wrong with "Unlimited" if its supplied but hosts can not offer UNLIMITED because it doesn't exisit.

My questions are:

Is there a such thing as UNLIMITED HARD DRIVES?

Is there a such thing as UNLIMITEDMbits?

Just my 3 Cents.

You'd be surprised how many people are ignorant about unlimited bandwidth because so many places are offering it, so they think it's possible. Those are the same people that think DSL and cable is unlimited bandwidth. They don't realize that the line's speed limit only allows you to use so much, and if you do start using too much bandwidth, your cable or DSL provider WILL complain. I've seen it happen, but most people don't use enough for their provider to worry about it. Then they say, "unlimited means no limit within reason, of course." Well, the problem is, with disk space and bandwidth, there is no definite "within reason." People don't realize how large and busy a site can get.

Chicken,

what about a newbie FAQ which goes along the lines of the microsoft page ( cant remember the URL at the mo ) ie. RTFM *please*....it would eliminate half the pointless threads here....

eg. hostx is down.... " did you contact them? " , " well no....thought i'd come here and moan first! " .....etc...etc....

It's still not unlimited. Are you saying companies like hostonce for example will let you use 100gb's of space?

From the UnlimBand site . . .
Web Hosting Companies that advertise "Unlimited Bandwidth" are giving out false information. In our long history, we have never seen any broadband company offering an internet connection as "Unlimited Megabytes Per Second." So, how could a Web Hosting Company, which normally doesn't even own its own access lines, advertise to customers that it will give them "UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH?" These Web Hosting Companies are lying to the public by placing ads on search engines and hosting directories to attract customers. Most of the time, high bandwidth sites on these "Unlimited" plans will be disconnected, and no refund given. Normally, the Web Hosting Company will say that the site violated its Acceptable Use Policy or Terms of Service. This is the reason why we set up this site, to educate people on the companies that scam individuals. The companies that bring bad feelings towards the word, HOSTING. . . . .

UnlimBand keeps a running list of hosts offering "unlimited" bandwidth . . . http://unlimband.com/

I posted this on another forum, but the same answer applies here as well.

Bandwidth is one of the more expensive expenses that a host needs to pay for. If they are not charging you for it, then the money needs to be made up somewhere else, usually in the area of support. Also, generally speaking hosts who offer unlimited BW or who don't charge for BW will shut down your site the second it starts to get popular. These hosts are not in it for the long term, they are just trying to make a quick buck. Do yourself a favor and start this experience off on the right foot so to speak and pay for a quality host.
