Here is what I want to do..

A friend of mine currently has a domain registered with GoDaddy. I want to take over the domain from him, so we were just going to transfer it between accounts on GoDaddy. They wanted us to snail mail a Photo ID, signed letter by the both of us, and a few other things. From the looks of it, it seems they think we are a buisness or something. After reading through everything I felt like going out and hiring a lawyer. :P

So, What is the easiest way to do this? Could I just have it transfered to another register and skip all of the paperwork junk? If not, oh well. I guess we will just have to go through it all. It just seems a bit complex for just transfering a domain.

Seems like a lot to go through for a domain. You aren't adopting a baby are you? I have heard that about Go Daddy before. Ever look around at the other ones out there?

We use 000 Domains (http://000domains.com) and we are happy with them. :) I like having a panel with all the domains in it, makes my life easier.

From what I can tell, this is only standard practice with GoDaddy. No one else requires you to jump through these hoops to transfer a domain or to change ownership unless you have lost the ability to manage your domains using your control panel - then you have to prove who you are to get access again.

Thanks guys. At least I won't have to mess with this at other places..

My other question is could I just go to another register and transfer that domain over to them without the paperwork? I wasn't sure if this could work since my friends owns the domain under GoDaddy and I need to own in under the new register.

You'll still have to deal with GoDaddy's "transfer away" policies and fee, but yes you can transfer to another Registrar.

I thought the transfer fees were for transferring ownership of the domain name within godaddy.

If you go to another registrar and sign up to transfer the domain name to them from godaddy, then I am sure that you dont have to pay a "transfer away fee". I have transferred domains away from godaddy with no problem at all, although it usually takes five days, as opposed to other companies where the transfer can happen within hours.

I would send godaddy an email and ask them about this, i am pretty sure that you pay the winning registrar and pay nothing to the losing registrar.

No, the transaction was completely electronic. But then I was the owner of the domain name who had initiated the transfer. You may encounter some problems if you try and transfer someone elses domain name. If your friend initiates the transfer, then make sure that he transfers it to a domain name company which has the facility to push the domain name between accounts free of charge.

I did 1 ownership transfer with Network Solutions and 1 with GoDaddy. Both asked for notarized documents signed by both parties. NetSol asked for 1 year's fees from the party it was transferred to. GoDaddy asked for $49.95 (now $9.95) from me.

Nowadays, I use Stargate. Paperless transfers, no fee.

Transfer away from GoDaddy to Stargate (or any other registrar that won't charge for ownership transfers) then change the owner.

My recollection is that GoDaddy was charging $19.95 for transfering away from them, but you are right, this looks like it was a price step in the ownership transfer charges. I've search the forums where this would have been posted and only find reference to ownership transfer fees.

I also believe that GoDaddy has a fee for transferring out. I know they did and believe they still do. And, I, like you, searched their entire site once looking for it and never could find it. In fact, I have searched many registrar's sites on both the methods and any fees for transferring away from them and, shockingly (he says sarcastically), they almost universally ignore this topic. But, they do give you excellent help on transferring in.

The answer to these speculations is "No". GoDaddy does NOT charge any fee to move to another Registrar. And I just moved 2 more domains to Stargate, BTW.
