Friends,
Gale Norton and her corporate lackeys at the Interior Department are at it again, trying to find ways to transfer precious publicly-owned lands from the protection of the federal government into the greedy hands of developers. Norton is attempting to change a federal regulation that will allow her turn over control of certain federal lands to the states. Many of these lands are already parts of national forests or are being considered for wilderness area designation. Once given away, they can never be reclaimed.
State governments, especially out west, are under heavy pressure from loggers, miners, and developers to grab these lands at the earliest opportunity so that they can be stripped and exploited for profit. Lands in Utah and Alaska are particularly at risk, and those are among the most fragile ecosystems in North America.
A decision will be made on this regulation on April 23. We have until then to bury the Bureau of Land Management under letters of protest. Remember, public lands are OURS. By definition, they belong to the American people. If the people speak, the lands can't be given away. So please speak.
You can make a big difference in less than two minutes of your time. First, forward this message to everyone you know who understands the value of preserving wilderness areas.
Second, visit the following web page maintained by the Wilderness Society: CLICK HERE PLEASE! (http://www.wilderness.org/takeaction/?step=2&item=1359) . From there you will be able to send a pre written message to the people that matter most in this effort, Jeff Holdren and Cynthia Ellis of the Bureau of Land Management. A copy will also be forwarded to the Department of the Interior so that Gale Norton will get a sense of just how out of step she is with the American people.
Thanks for your help.
Jim
