Hi,

I've currently got hold of 2 raq 4s. As i understand it, they can both run about 250 websites each. I have an ADSL line in my home with a fixed IP address. The upload speed is 256k at the moment.

What I'd like to know (if someone can help me out), is how many low-to-medium traffic websites would I be able to run on this line without it being really slow? What have your experiences been? Would I be able to connect 4 raqs to it and host 1000 sites on the one line?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Each RaQ will need it's own IP address. So you will first be limited to the number of RaQs you can run by the number of IPs on your DSL line.

Each RaQ can host up to 200 sites (it's an arbitrary hard-coded number that can be changed if you want, but it's not recommended), and that's a max for small brochure-ware sites. If you are doing any dynamic stuff (PHP, CGIs, etc), email/spam filtering, etc., your resource utilization will go way up, and the number of sites you can comfortably host will go down.

As far as how slow it would be, it's one of those "it all depends" answers. If you have some really low traffic (in the hundreds of total hits each per day), you could probably put all 200 up there and not notice a thing. If you offer large files to download, each of those will take RAM and time to send out. Any modern server, RaQs included, can easily saturate a T1 line before they fall over, so you will be bound more by the CPU and RAM than by bandwidth.

Assuming you had 4 IP addresses (and if you use them all for your RaQs, how will you use your PC(s) to get online etc?), I doubt you could actually run 1000 sites on it without noticing some performance issues, unless every site is static HTML with small images etc., and each gets a handful of visitors a day.
