View Full Version : Which is the best Control Panel?
FrzzMan 04-13-2002, 08:41 AM I'm lookin' for a multiple domains hosting.... They offer me some reseller package. Some have CPanel, some have HSphere...
I don't know which is the best to go. CPanel of Pleask?? or HSphere???
Errr, and can you tell me what I can do with a reseller host package??? Anything for a newbie like me have to know?
Tim Greer 04-13-2002, 09:30 AM TimPanel 2.0 is the best you'll ever get, but I admit that I'm a little biased.
nelix 04-13-2002, 09:31 AM Plesk gives you the most control over multihosted domains, for me if a host doesnt have if there not worth bothering with;)
try www.hostnexus.com they use plesk and are the best around for multi-hosted domains:)
knotty 04-14-2002, 09:21 PM It depends how you're using your domain and what features you need/want to be able to access/change quickly and with the minimum wasting of bandwidth (to download pretty pictures/icons in those control panels).
Hsphere has a steep learning curve if you're used to anything else. Also, its pages are horribly bloated (pretty pages but about 10x heavier than they need to be in terms of a straightforwardly useable interface). If you're a total newbie (with control panels and/or managing a domain) I recommend against Hsphere.
CPanel is also heavy on the images when it doesn't need to be, with either "menu style" or I forget the name of it "other style" -- but both load pretty icons and the former uses frames that don't always refresh properly, and the navigation is a pain in the ass, especially if you want to add, say, 25 new aliases in one session. Lots of clicking around when you should be able to get where you're going with one click.
If you want to manage mailbot mailing lists (not Mailman or MajorDomo) neither Hsphere or CPanel will give you any joy. Hosts that use these control panels have a directory setup (possibly proprietary and locked into the control panel they're using -- I'm not sure on that point) which prevents you from doing almost anything with FTP except upload files. FTP is the fastest way to 'communicate' with your site. A browser interface just won't cut it, and some browser-based functions like CHMOD do not work reliably (leaving you tearing your hair out because your script won't work and you've followed the instructions ten times already).
Plain but simple and functional and "low weight": mailplus. Generally uses webalizer stats (not the best; Hsphere has a better stats program in the form of ModLogan) but otherwise the control panel is pleasant to use and the navigation is not a pain in the ass. Also, if your host uses mailplus you can modify aliases (mail forwards), mailbot lists and infobots just through FTP. That's much more efficient (consider if you need to change the destination for 10 aliases -- through a control panel you might have to load 200k worth of pretty webpage just to do that, whereas with FTP you upload one file that might be 2k). Additionally, CPanel and Hsphere don't let you change the destination address for an alias -- you have to delete it then add it again.
Oh well, my (experienced) 2 cents' worth. ;)

I need to disagree. I was told two and 1/2 years ago that that version 2.1 would out. We have been waiting for FP Extension support '98, PHP 3.0 and other hot releases now for years. I think people would be best to avoid TimPanel. Plus there is a lot of wasted text and long paragraphs used to describe things that could take one short sentence. Go with Ensim!

But I'll be completing those patches all week. I promise by next Monday, you will see compatibility with all the new and cutting edge components; Apache 1.1.1, Perl 4, Python (whenever that comes out), PHP 3, and many, many more. Just be patient, it's coming!
geez, im sold.. where can I pick up this CP.. I suppose it would come with quite a hefty price tag with those features.
chrisb 04-15-2002, 02:00 AM I see someone else made the same mistake I did when I posted about the Control Panel the other day. I didn't realize there's a separate forum for it, but while we on it...
I like CPanel because it has a file mgr where you can chmod, edit, move, copy, rename, and unzip files. Can Plesk do this? Does Plesk also have a good email filter like CPanel where you can filter by subject, body, rules, etc on Neomail(webmail)?
I agree though that CPanel needs an alternative skin to get rid of most of the graphics.
Also, FTP has no bearing on how CPanel works, AFAIK. FTP always works fine for me at CPanel host.

That's one of the only things that kept me from choosing hostnexus. That, and the fact they have no U.S. phone number.
NexDog 04-15-2002, 05:09 AM Hi,
Toll-free phone support will be available by the end of the week.

That's good news! Got a CPanel with a WebHost Manager. Plesk doesn't have a file mgr does it?
Now if you could only support my clients like OLM, and have Site5's uptime. :-)
Of course, I'd do the billing and marketing. :spin:
nelix 04-15-2002, 06:43 AM and the fact they have no U.S. phone number.
even though they dont have phone support their support response time is great. If i have an Urgent problem i just open up a live chat window with them and they fix it/help me instantly:D
also the forum is very lively and full of helpful ppl;)

I'm considering on licensing it out at $29 a hour or $2000 a month. Let me know if you're interested.
