Hi guys,

i would like to know if in my domain panel, i insert 4 different nameservers : for instance :
-ns1.abc.com
-ns2.abc.com
-ns1.123.com
-ns2.123.com

is that mean if the abc.com server is down, the users will be directed to 123.com server and vice versa ?

if that is not the case, what can we do to accomplish this ? i would the users able to view our website even one of the servers is down.

please advise.

What you are referring to is called redundancy and unfortunately can't be achieved the way you thought.

Google redundant nameservers and all will be revealed :D

For what you want to accomplish, certainly it is more complicated that just inserting valid DNS into your domain name registrar.

Read the definition about Round Robin then start from there. :)

hi,

then how come some domain put more than 2 nameservers..
e.g :
ns6.1800flowers.com
ns2.1800flowers.com
ns3.1800flowers.com
ns5.1800flowers.com
ns4.1800flowers.com
ns1.1800flowers.com

hope some of you can explain to me why they put so many nameservers and how could we do that...

please advise

From what I understand it will query all servers the first one that responds is the one it uses. If one server is down, obviously it will not respond and will move on to the next

then if in my case, i put such as follow :
-ns1.abc.com
-ns2.abc.com
-ns1.123.com
-ns2.123.com

wouldn't the users will be directed to 123.com if abc.com server is down ?

Hello,

Yes, when the Primary Nameserver (ns1.abc.com) is down, the Secondary NameServers will be contacted in the order you listed.

Actually if the Primary NameServer and Secondary NameServer are not in the same server or same region, the chances that both NameServers are down is very small. That's why some domain extensions require a different IP class C for Primary and Secondary Nameservers.

Yes, that is correct, it goes to the secondary.
