View Full Version : Who will let me administrate their Sun/Solaris system?

Hi, this might sound strange and please read this and bare with me -- and I'm not looking for a "job" or anything -- and I mean, not for free or paid. Allow me to explain. I have a lot of experience administrating a lot of systems, and mostly Unix variants -- stuff like Linux and *BSD. However, it's been a while since I've been on a Sun Solaris system. I want to get back into it, just to make sure I'm up to date on things. This isn't a job -- I don't want to be an administrator, and I'm not looking to just help out for free and volunteer and commit to being an administrator or anything -- and I'm not asking or wanting to be paid. I am simply looking for someone that will allow me to use their server to get more familiar with it. I know 75+% of all the stuff already on it, and I know about (I'd gauge) 30% of the stuff that's specifically Solaris oriented, but I want to get familiar again with the other 70% of the Solaris specific aspects that you can only get with using it. I know enough not to screw things up, and I'm once again not volunteering to be a free admin, but you will certainly benefit from me working on and tweaking it. So, it sort of is an offer to help out, in exchange for allowing me to get familiar with it more, since it's been a while.

I know this might sound strange, and I want to be clear, that this would only be in my spare time (it can't interfere with any work or anything I need to do). I simply don't want to spend the money for a real, and decent Sun Solaris system. I don't want to run X86 Solaris. I am trying to find someone with a Solaris 8 OS, on a real Sun system. You can check around here and see that I'm fairly well known and I can be trusted, but I'm willing to talk about whatever you might need. I'm just trying to expand my knowledge without great expense too. To be clear, I'm not a newbie, or someone that thinks that since they are a webmaster and know HTML, that they are qualified to run a server. I've been doing server administration, security, scripting, programming, setups and configurations since 1995 -- I simply don't want to pay to get into Solaris again, and I don't want to commit to anything or volunteer to be someone's administrator -- but again, you will get the benefits of my working on it -- assuming anyone would want or need any help in exchange for allowing me to configure and tweak their Solaris system to make it the best it can be. I figure it's worth a try to ask, unless someone wants to "donate" a Sun system that I can run Solaris 8 on, that is. (Hey, that was worth a try too! :-)

[Edit: Someone just brought this to my attention, that coming from "me", this post seems quite odd. I guess I've never asked a question here and have always just posted answers, so it seems odd to have me post something like this, so I can "learn" something. Crap, I've been exposed as not knowing it all. :-) Heh.]

Have you tried your local university? They probably have all sorts of antique sun boxen which they'd be willing to get rid of.

I appreciate the suggestion. Unfortunately it's just local community colleges and they (at least in this area) don't have anything decent. I also want to use Solaris 8 and I'm not sure if that will run on an older system. I might just end up buying one, but I would probably get carried away and get the nicest, largest, most powerful system and my wife would not agree it was a wise investment (and she'd probably be right). :-)

I got some views on this thread (probably because people have no idea what it was about and just click on anything unread :-). Would this be better to move it to one of the lower forums about "Related offers and requests" or something? Could a mod move this, if they see this, as I think that would be a better forum to have this thread in. It's not a big deal either way, it just occurred to me earlier, is all. Thanks.

I'll check with one of my buddies downtown on Monday. At one point he had a bunch of Suns put on the shelf after a big project fizzled out. I'll see if I can snag one of 'em for you.

Tim,

Check out eBay. You can buy a pretty decent Ultra 1 for $150 nowadays. Monitor, keyboard and mouse for another $50. Get a copy of Solaris and your good to go.

I did the same with a Sparc 2 a couple of years ago. The machine was damn slow running anything but it was a good tool to get up to speed on Solaris 8.

Good luck,

Brian

Thanks for the offers, I'll get back to you guy's (I've responded to you already, Jay, and thanks! :-) Keep me updated on that stuff, and thanks for the suggestion Brian. I don't know if I want to go that slow. I can probably pick up some Sparc 5's pretty cheap (or "a Sparc 5") off of Ebay for a few hundred, but I'm married and ... well... I can't justify spending even ~$300 on much, after all the stuff I buy. I might buy a decent Sun system soon though.

Understood. Completely. (I'm married to, and my wife just shakes here head every 3 months when I buy a new gadget, computer, printer, etc.) :-)

Ultra 1's aren't too bad of a machine. (170mhz I think.) Their faster than Sparc 5's - even the later ones, and they are more expandable. If you aren't running a ton of services on it, it should be a pretty decent box.

Of course, if someone just gives you one for free, even better.

Take care,

Brian

Solaris 8 is free. I may even have an extra set of media laying around. Get Solaris 8 x86, install it and you're set.
