So I've been reading up and going to start providing web hosting to about 30 people. Starting off slow and see how it goes from there as I want to make sure I can handle this. I won't be making any money as these 30 people know who I am and I have asked them to test me out for 3 months free as I will not offer web services until I am fully confident I know what I am doing.
My question is after reading alot up on Linux, Apache, and things of that nature related to web hosting and then I started talking to someone at work who sells hosting on the side (I did not know until now). He informed me that most of what is needed to be done can be done through WHM which I did not know since I only had a reseller WHM panel. He also informed me that there isn't I need to do much except for some basic Apahce Rewrites if I go the managed server way. Is that true?
Next question is do you partition the drive (vhost) or can you just use the one physical drive without creating several virutal drives and if I did create virtual drives would that increase my storage capacity as I really don't see how it is possible to make much of a server if I don't create some more space without spending money (I calculate that I would make around 20% after overhead if drive is not increased showhow). Most of my customers are not just someone who wants to play around on the web as they run hardcore business online. I plan to get a dual chip, maybe xeon, with at least 4 gigs of mem 120gig w/raid1 controller. Is that to much or to little as only half (15) use databases and out of that half only 10 of them are larger (over 50mb, largest is 232mb). I plan to add 15 more next month from there friends and I do not know what kind of sites they run. Do I need more mem to handle mysql? Can some give me a breakdown how much you but on a 120 drive if it was 70% average users (small sites, less then 10 have databases) + 30% larger database driven sites.
Thrid, opinions on someone with little knowledge going into webhosting coming from a reseller account which I handled a few clients off of. My server is managed as I will be going with liquid web.
