Well... you would have to become very well known. Possibly offer something all the other directories don't. There will always be submissions, but they have to be successful for them to come back. Especially if the host is paying to have their company listed.

If you can invest in development and do strong SEO for this directory - then YES - I would say $50,000 or more.

Otherwise - don't waste your time it's oversaturaded - webhosts don't want to advertise on directory's anymore.

SEO is definite an important point to consider when doing web hosting directory.

As a web host, we would prefer a webhosting directory that has the ease of updating plans and the directory is well connected to the visitors/clients.:)

Yup. SEO.

Also, if you can get a lot of sites submitted it will be a plus. Thus trying something none of the others have, such as offering incentives, might help.

You should write article about it adding few current updates. Make a press release about it and announce it in forums. You should implement some new techniques as most of the people are scanning information rather than going in depth for finding host providers or for getting other information.

If you were to open a web hosting directory make sure its unique in its offerings to help out web hosting companies. If you focus on new methods how to help web hosting companies increase sales your directory will be great... if you follow the many others that just list a ton of companies and hope people come to the web site your directory will get lost with the others.

good luck!

The SEO fees that it would take to get to the top would be so great, it would almost outweigh the long term returns.

The amount of links one would need is really unfeasable unless you have a large pocketbook. :)

In otherwords, you're not going to get there by SEO.

Perhaps try some PPC on overture and google. (google first)
