View Full Version : I've got the "Site Down" blues
A while back, I posted in the advertising section seeking a new web host. I made my choice, ecommerce discovery, and have been happy...
Until now.
My host is down, with no news as to when it will come back up.
According to the latest information, a pipe (owned by cogent) died, so that hosed the network.
Okay, I understand that. The frustration is that there is no backup system, meaning there was not a true disaster/recovery plan in place to deal with these types of scenarios.
Two days is a LONG time in the 'Net world. Meanwhile, I've got visitors PMing me asking me what's going on.
*banging head against desk*
I'm trying to be patient, and to their credit ecommerce discovery has kept me more or less up on what's happening (including possible compensation for what's going on), but that still does not alleviate the anxiety.
So, any suggestions on how to handle this without blowing a gasket?

Take a break....
watch tv or listen to music away from the computer for about an hour, then eat a small snack....
then you can come back to your computer and see if there's any new news, if there isn't then you might want to start searching for a new host, or stick it out for a while if you want.
but you're right, there's no reason for any host not to have redundant connections, especially one using cogent

phpcoder 04-14-2002, 10:47 AM Think on the positive side... they are probably going to fix it ASAP and then re-enforce the issue, so that it doesnt happen again... or they are taking a little extra time to make sure it doesn't happen again.
but it's beginning to happen more and more often.
today for example the server my site is on has been down twice. no word at all from ecommercediscovery as to what the problem is, no word on how long until it's working again. nothing at all except silence.
last week the same server was down at least once that I was aware of and again, obsolutely no word from ecommercediscovery.
i understand down time is inevitable but when it happens repeatedly and with no word from the host, that makes you worry

I'm on ecommercediscovery too, and have not had any great problems in the last year.
What is the hostname of the server you are on, and is it the old h-sphere system (dnscamp.com) because you should have recieved an email detailing migration details to the new Servers (typically with hostnames ending in ecddns.com).
I'm sure Josh will get back to you pretty soon if you email him at freedom@ecommercediscovery.com or josh@ecommerecdiscovery.com, he always gets back to me very quickley when I've needed him.

They Certainly did fix it, they went out and bought 5 new servers and sent them to a new faster and more reliable datacenter, and have improved vastly.
I'm a server called Hydrogen. It was down again for 5 hours today.
This time however, there was an email. The site was taken down to replace some hardware.
That server is located in the burst.net data center. is it me or do all servers in burst, seem to... well burst (ie fail all the time)?
Josh has said he will move my account to a new server.

When you have 700+ servers in a data center, you are going to have some hardware problems...a % of such just comes with the business. Alot of times machines are just overloaded, with too many accounts, and cannot handle it. And yes, it can take many hours to diagnose, repair, re-install, & restore a server back to original condition sometimes...the majority of which time is the actual cpanel install (30-60 minutes alone) and data copying (could take 4-5 hours on a 60GB IDE HD)...

We would like to inform you that we are currently having some issue problem our Hydrogen server. We are taking it down for hardware testing. No data will be lost. We are just pulling it down for SCSI controller card replacement and perform some load testing. We are expecting the server back online within an hour or two.

No, It may be something wrong with your own company too!
I have been on 5 different servers in your data center. I have never had uptimes more than 99%. I had an experience of a down time of at least 9 hours on every server.
After those experiences, I know that if I agree to be on a Burst server I will experience a down time of more than 10 hours each 2-3 months.
Everytime a server had a serious (hardware) problem it took at least 9-10 hours before the server came up.
As an example I have experienced 3 hard disk replacements. On a mchost server it took about 15 hours to replace hard disk. We had about 7 days of continues down times. You were unable to repair the server in a timely manner.

Thank god somebody said it like it is.
if you got 700 servers, that means 700 hard drives, that means at least 1 hard drive failing every 4 days ( hard drive failures I know of and how to calculate the chance of failure ), or you might have a white cloud datacenter ( that's a datacenter where everything is perfect for months at a time, but when all hell breaks loose it breaks loose real good )
Sean, you might just want to have C.panel preloaded on a few hard drives to do quick swaps in and out on a hard drive crash then you would save that 1 hour+ ( i'm guessing that you have simular configuration on al the machines).
