Hello,

Does anybody knows if it is possible to - or has anybody tried to restore the CobaltOS to a normal PC instead of the Cobalt RaQ4 using the restore CD?

Greetings,

Lode

I believe in the Raq OS liscence, it says that you are not allowed to do this. (I'm about 80% sure on this).

Now, whether it is technically possible... I'm not sure. You'd have to have similar hardware in your PC, which you probably do not have unless you are running a sun machine.

Anyway... I doubt it's possible, and either way I think it is most likely illegal... so take that for what it's worth! :D

Thanx!

Does anybody knows if it is possible to boot a PC with an ethernet card without bootrom...?

Has somebody have success with this? I’m also interested if is possible to restore the cobalt os on a normal pc. Yes, I know it is not allowed. But I’m curios. Thanks

you can't do it without hacking up the core of the OS
keep in mind that the Raq's have their own hardware and the OS is writen just for that hardware.

the time you'll spend trying to get it to work won't be worth the trouble

Yeah, generally they are MIPS systems, and a typical computer is i386...

Uh, almost. The RaQ and RaQ2 are MIPS, everything since has been i386. You couldn't do it anyway, there are some hard-coded dependencies that would have to be overcome (though technically possible, definitely not worth the effort required.)

A RaQ 4 os 'might' work as RaQ 4s use AMD K6-2 CPUs

Well, it's a wee bit more complicated than that. But don't take my word for it, I suggest each of you try it for yourself. $50 to anyone who's already posted to this thread who makes it work on a white box and can provide me with enough detail to allow me to duplicate your success.

LOL - have fun.

So by just doing this:

- Restore OS to a RaQ4
- Remove HD out of the RaQ4
- attach HD to a PC
......
It won't work?

Anybody tried so...?

we recently tried to load redhat on an old RaQ2 with no luck, someone mentioned that is would be possible to get net-bsd on one but never got around to it. I would also be interested if someone has got this to work. actually i think i read this wrong so nevermind:stickout

Not that i've done it, but *wink wink* - you cant copy cobalts whole os onto a white box but you can install redhat 6.2 and then copy their control panel over - but the button and LCD scripts wont work - but the control panel will :) - we did this when we migrated to white box, but we never used it because it was illegal, and we wrote our own based on cobalts - point being it can be done. Anyone interested can PM me :) (umm... and if you don't hear from me, that means SUN has captured me and deported me :( )

It is not possible to use the OS restore disk on a normal PC.

1. Its illegal.
2. Cobalt uses its own unique hardware (my assumption is that it looks for specific information in the bios or otherwise).

I have tried moving the hard drive to a new PC (just curious like my freind above) - it would not even go to the bootloader.

I've read on a forum that it is possible too run the Cobalt Raq OS on an normal PC, by making a Ghost of the HD from the RaQ. Then make with the ghost image an new HD for in the normal pc and it works.

I've don't tried this by my self, so i don't know it's true.

Try it and let us hear it.

Again, it is most likely impossible to run the actual cobalt installation on a normal pc, but it is 100% possible to run their control panel on a normal pc

do you know what we have to copy to a PC to do that ?

Its a bit more complicated than just copying files... and i dont know the legality of this, rather the illegality of this so im not sure ....

and what's up if we try to take a HD of a XTR (intel based) and if we try to put it in a normal PC ? I think that this can be possible. Or should Cobalt really take a look at the hardware or bios??? ;(
And if, it can be possible to make a ReadHat upgrade, no ?
I know that uk2raq pretend that he made a RedHat upgrade (to 7.x if i remember...)
I will try this soon.

Atrocityb, We'd be pleased if you tell us the results

Just swapping a harddrive from a XTR to a pc is harder than it sounds. It will surly fail on boot since the hardware it was setup with wont be there. Same with just a straight copy of all the files. I have no doubt the CP will work though since its all just script files.

Im not sure what the whole hoopla is over it being Illegal as long as you dont go around installing the OS on whit boxes and start hosting customers on it so you dont have to buy a real Raq . The minute money enters the issue, its illegal, but playing around doens't matter.

Indeed...

On a to-raq-restored PC it's possible to experiment with new packages, services, scripts,...

Nobody does this on the machines that are in use by customers I hope ...
