I want to create a simple classifieds site but I'd like for there to be a search feature where people can search for a product within X miles of zip code 34119 for example. I've seen this done time and time again on other sites but I'm not sure how they do it. Could anybody give me any advise or show me a link perhaps to a site that explains it?

I'm using PHP. But how does it actually work? Is there a public database for this or do you create one?

Well we purchased a ZIP code database from Zip Code Download (http://www.zipcodedownload.com). It seems now they charge for the source code (http://www.zipcodedownload.com/Products/Family/DistRad/) as well and they bundle it with all different languages it seems.

www.zipmath.com does what you're asking, and it only costs $100/yr. - very cheap for this type of service!
