Hello webmasters, and welcome to our official competition information thread! You may or may not know why you are here, and that's perfectly fine. I'm here to tell you what the competition is all about, and why you should compete!
To start off, BarbedHost is a fairly new company. We're actually working on making BarbedHost a corporation, This means that we'll be soon called BarbedHost Incorporated, or something similar to that. This makes us extremely busy people, which means we currently have neither the time or the skills to devote to designing our own web site. This is where the competition comes into play. We're searching for a full-time webmaster for BarbedHost. Whomever we choose does not need to devote entire days to the site, but we'd like some updates here and there, and then some major things occasionally. After the first few things are done, we won't ask for much, but we will continue to pay whomever we select monthly, as long as they remain an active and helpful staff member.
The first few things that we ask of our webmaster, will be important parts of our business and web site. These tasks will include: Building the main web site, integrating ModernBill into the web site, creating a vBulletin skin, and several other things that we may have overlooked. Below are the requirements for the webmaster:
Has a sense of style and creativity
Able to provide what we need
Able to use Adobe Photoshop
Knows how to use PHP, HTML, and MySQL
Willing to learn new skills and techniques
Has the time to devote to BarbedHost
Has previous experience with web design
Understands that one failure isn't the end of the world
Persistant; Doesn't give up
As this is essentially a job, we are also paying the webmaster to work. On a busy month for the webmaster, we will pay up to 25% of the profits for that month. As long as the webmaster remains active, we will not pay below 5% of the profits for every month. We consider busy as: Developing an entire new web site, Creating a new skin for the forums, Modifying the entire backend of the site, etc. We consider active as: Making a few changes, Checking the web site constantly, Staying active on the forums, Making suggestions for improvement, etc. Please keep in mind when considering this competition, that BarbedHost is a fairly new company. We have not established a very large customer base yet, but that is also part of the webmaster's responsibility, since the web site is what either attracts or repels the customer. As the company grows, the webmaster will have the potential to make hundreds and thousands of dollars every month. When we find a webmaster that we like, we can negotiate slightly on the salary, but we cannot pay a fixed rate every month, only a percentage.
Since we are now past the general job information part of the page, we can get to the fun part: The Competition. In order to win the competition, and receive the job title "Webmaster" at BarbedHost, you will need to submit two things: A web site layout and a logo for BarbedHost. We will then have each layout and logo judged by several people, including several members of the public, customers, and both my partner and I. Below, I'll define exactly what needs to be included in the design:
Web Site Layout
The web site layout is the most important out of both of the entry requirements for the contest. It needs to be creative, easy to navigate, original, and fast-loading. It can be submitted in full-size high quality jpeg format ONLY. This is so that we can effectively judge which design is the best. TEMPLATES WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT BE ACCEPTED! If we find that the layout is a template, you will be disqualified immediately. The more original and creative the site is, the more likely you are to win the competition.
BarbedHost Logo
The logo, while not as important as the layout, will also define who we are. It will be used on any merchandise that we may brand, any future web sites that you may develop, etc. It may also be used to watermark documents that we send out. We will not judge entirely on the logo, in fact, as long as it looks good and fits the layout and colors that you include in the web site design, we will likely accept it. We understand that the logo can be developed more to our taste, and therefore we don't expect any "perfect" logos.
Once you have fully completed your web design and logo, and you have confidence that your entry will stand a chance against other possible entries, attach both to an e-mail that has a subject beginning with "ENTRY:" and send it to: contest@barbedhost.net. You MUST include the following in your e-mail with both the logo and the web design attached:
Your full name (First and Last)
The e-mail that you wish to be contacted at.
Any experience that you have with web design, php, etc.
At least TWO previous works.
Why you think you deserve to get the job.
How many hours every week you are available.
How many hours every week you are available.
What inspired you to create the web design/logo. (Link to web sites if there are any)
Any other comments/questions you may have.
Thank you for taking the time to read this page. If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesistate to e-mail us with "QUESTION:" or "COMMENT:" beginning the subject line at: contest@barbedhost.net. Again, thank you, and we hope that you'll consider entering in the competition!

The web site for the competition is http://www.barbedhost.net/contest/. It's pretty much exactly what is here, but it may be updated sooner, etc.
I'm not going to give an exact salary, because as stated above, it will vary depending on how active you are monthly, and how much profit we take in. (Though the profit will largely fall on the webmaster and the marketing people) But I will warn you, that the starting profit is going to be fairly low. HOWEVER, as long as you stick to your end of the deal, we'll stick with ours. Meaning if we do begin to make millions of dollars in profit every month (Though highly unlikely for a long time), you will still get paid your 25% or 5% depending on how active you are.
