Hello Boardies,

a few question ...
is it possible to install the Qube3 Restore cd on an RAQ 3 or 4?

if the answer is no ...

is it possible to run a domain server for win clients on RAQ 3 or 4?
is it possible to use fetchmail on an RAQ 3 or 4?
(pickup mails from different pop3 boxes around the web with the raq)

Thanks

Philip

Yes, it is possible and works very well. I have several clients who prefer the RaQ form factor but need the Qube functionality (file sharing mainly).

Just be sure to use the proper Qube ISO image for your RaQ hardware (Qube Business for single drive, Qube Professional for dual drive/RAID)

Fine, thank you Bruce ... i prefer the RAQ size, too. :)
And whats whith the missing second network card?
Any problems with the new image?

Can i use the Qube Updates? Are there any kernel Updates for raqs with the Qube os? Do you know a site with a free custom Qube3 restore CD with the patches?

Thank you Bruce ... is there anything that you dont know about the Cobalts?

You might have a RaQ 4 (not the 4i or 4r), or a RaQ 3 (predecessor of the 3i). Those models were built that way. The Qube payload might get confused about that, especially if you are trying to use it as a NAT box, firewall, etc.

Any problems with the new image?

Not sure what image that is. Any of the ISOs on the Sun FTP server should be fine (ftp://ftp.cobalt.sun.com/pub/iso/)

Can i use the Qube Updates?

Yes, not a problem. The hardware is virtually identical between the RaQ 3/4 and Qube 3.

Are there any kernel Updates for raqs with the Qube os?

None that are Qube-specific that I'm aware of. I would check Nuonce.net, Solarspeed.net, and CobaltSupport.com for add-ons, updates, etc.

Do you know a site with a free custom Qube3 restore CD with the patches?

I think Nuonce.net, RaQware.com, and Solarspeed.net (and maybe CobaltSupport.com) all sell or have available alternate ISO images.

Thank you Bruce ... is there anything that you dont know about the Cobalts? [/B]

:) Well, I did learn a lot about them while I was there. But there are lots of folks in the community who know at least as much, if not more about certain aspects of them. Gerald at RaQware.com is "the man" for hardware-related stuff. Michael at SolarSpeed and Brian at Nuonce are also tops.

Ok the there is a second Network device in the RAQ4.
I think there is one problem useing the Qube3 OS - when a Qube is nearly the same as a RAQ3/4 - The Rom Upgrade.

The RAQ4 is running RAQ5 OS/newest Rom. I think, i have to downgrade the rom before installing Qube3 OS ?!

Is there any easy way to downgrade the rom of the RAQ4?
Any PKG installer out there?

What do you think BruceT?

No you should be fine with the ROM you have now. The only ROM issues that I know of are if you upgrade to the RaQ 550 OS, then try to downgrade again.

There are some ROM PKGs at CobaltFAQs.com. You can also find them on the Sun FTP server someplace, and also lots of ROM info at cobalt.iceblink.org

Have a look on this Posting from Sep04:

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=263289&highlight=qube3

I tried to use a RAQ4 restore CD to revert it back to being a RAQ4, it went through the restore procedure but when it rebooted it said "boot failed, loading from rom" and started to go through the restore process again.

The RaQ4 and the RaQ550 are running different ROM images... and what you have done is "KILL" your unit

Whats going wrong with the downgrade? Wrong rom version?
I dont want to kill my Raq :-)

Can i use the EOL ISOs for the Qube3 too?

1. Qube3-EOL-4000WG-xxx.iso = Qube3 Standard
2. Qube3-EOL-4010WG-xxx.iso = Qube3 with Caching
3. Qube3-EOL-4100WG-xxx.iso = Qube3 with Caching and RAID

1+2 = Qube3 Business?
3 = Qube3 Prof.

Thanks

No, as I said, you cannot just install the RaQ 4 OS if the unit previously had the 550 OS on it, unless you manually downgrade the ROM while it's still a 550. Then OS Restore with the RaQ 4 CD. The RaQ 4 OSRCD will not work with the newer RaQ 550 ROM.

Also, there were some RaQs that have the Intel ROM in them, and those are not flashable. Contact Gerald at RaQware.com for more info (how to identify if you do have the Intel chips) and a workaround (ROM chip replacement I think).

Yes, the EOL CD images are the most up-to-date from Sun, so those are the ones you should use. ISO #1 is the Qube 'Standard', ISO #2 is the Qube 'Business' and ISO #3 is Qube 'Professional'

If you have a single drive, use #2. If you have 2 drives, use #3. Don't bother with #1 at all, IMO.

OK, one final question to be sure :)

The only ROM issues that I know of are if you upgrade to the RaQ 550 OS, then try to downgrade again.

Installing Qube3 OS on an RAQ4i with RAQ5 Software is not a downgrade and a Rom downgrade to RAQ4 is not needed!?

Qube3 OS ---- INSTALL ON ---- RAQ4i/RAQ5OS = NEWEST ROM OK
RAQ4i OS ---- INSTALL ON ---- RAQ4i/RAQ5OS = ROM DOWNGRADE

Thanks and sorry for my stupid question ... i want the save way for my littele RAQ

If you already have the 550 OS on a RaQ or Qube, you will need to downgrade the ROM first before installing any non-550 OS.

If you do not have the 550 OS on a RaQ or Qube, you do not need to touch the ROM when installing any non-550 OS.

OK, i have to downgrade the rom, but which Rom is the last RAQ4 Rom?

Can i use one of these Rom Pkgs from cobaltfaq to get the old RAQ4 Rom back / Downgrade the Rom?

ROM-update-2.3.38-1.pkg
ROM-update-2.3.35-1.pkg
ROM-update-2.3.34-2.pkg

If no, please give me a Link to download a RAQ4 Rom PKG.

Thanks

I would use the 2.3.38. I don't think you can install that PKG on the 550 though; it's a different format. You may need to do the ROM flashing manually.

See http://cobalt.iceblink.org/ for info, tools and directions.

Hmm a difficult task for beginning linux. Is there no PKG downgrade file on the web? Anyone on the board who can make such a file? Who made the Upgrade PKS on Cobaltfaq?
Is it possible to edit pkgs to use another rom file? I think there are a lot of other raq users which want a save way to downgrade - no more dead cobalt boxes ;)

Anoyone on the board who can explain a linux beginner how to built such a pkg rom?

Is there any danger for my Raq4i trying to install QubeOS3 on it with the RAQ5 Rom?

Thanks

Hello Bruce,

i did the downgrade ... it works ... i downgraded my RAQ4i to 2.3.40 ... trying to install Qube3 OS failed. I Used Qube3-EOL-4010WG-xxx.iso - it stays on Kernel Loading - now restoreing back to RAQ4, upgradeing to new Rom an install the RAQ5 os again. What goes wrong? Any boot options to select to get the qube3 os working?

Philip2
10-05-2005, 03:51 PM
Hmm ... i downgraded the 2.40 rom to 2.38, install the qube3 os and the OS Starts ... hmm is the qube3 os not working woith the 2.40 rom?

Are there any updates for Qube3 OS since the last Restore CD?

Stupid question ... how long needs a Qube3 Restore?
It seems to hang afte rthe first reboot at

lease150.mfg.cob
10.0.0.150

but a long time after the mail setup the raq shows ... smb setup and

lease150.mfg.cob
10.0.0.150

appears again ...

is this a normal process or is there something going wrong?

Thanks Phil

I think it hangs ... wait a few minutes to be sure ...
Have you taken the right OS?
Is the RAQ running as a RAQ5 before? If YES you have to downgrade the Rom.
Try the OS install again ... perhaps it will work now. Dont forget that the Cube OS needs more time to be installed (on my installation) ... dont forget ... you can use a nullmodem cable to watch whats the RAQ doing at the moment.
